Control Powers: An introduction and Tutorial
Created by Burstdragon323

Hello, Captains.

With fixes to Gravity Well and Tyken's Rift underway, I thought this would be a good time to teach some of the newer players, as well as more experienced players, on how Control pwers work, and how effective you can make them.

What is a "Control Power"?

This is a common question I get from friends and Fleet-Mates who dont know what Control Powers are. Simply put, a Control Power is an ability that restricts the targets movement in some way. A good example of a control power is [Tractor Beam], as it prevents the target from moving.

How effective are Control Powers?

Control Powers are by nature, a "situational" power. This means that you can use the power any time, but they are most effective when used at the right time. An example would be using [Tractor Beam] on a target trying to escape your atack.

Is there more than one type of Control Power?

Yes, there is. At the core level, there are Four (4) types. I'll list an example for each.

-Offensive Control [Tractor Beam]
-Offensive Crowd Control [Gravity Well]
-Defensive Control [Polarize Hull]
-Defensive Crowd Control [Tractor Beam Repulsors]

Do I have to be a Science Captain to make Control Powers useful?

No. Any captain can make use of Control Powers. In fact, alot of captains use either [Polarize Hull] or [Attack Pattern Omega], as they are Defensive Control powers. Some captains use [Gravity Well] and/or [Tyken's Rift] to enhance their playstyles.

Is there a list of Control Powers?

I'll be glad to give you a list. If the power comes from a console, I'll list that too:

Subspace Jump {Console, Ki'tang Bird of Prey Refit}
Molecular Phase Inversion Field {Console, D'ridthau Warbird Battle Cruiser}
Fleet Maneuver Gamma {Console, Jen'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier}
Graviton Shield {Multidimensional Analysis Module, Vesta Strategic Explorer}

-Defensive Crowd Control-
Fleet Maneuver Gamma {Console, Jen'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier}
Graviton Shield {Multidimensional Analysis Module, Vesta Strategic Explorer}
Projected Singularity {Console, D'deridex Warbird Retrofit}

To show an example, I'm going to add a link to a build I used in my Pre-LoR days that is pretty effective in CC. Feel free to use it, or build your own style off of it.

If anyone thinks I may have left out some consoles, feel free to post such, and I will add them along with crediting you (I put the finishing touches on this whilst being sick).
Feel Free to comment as well.

You are forgetting the Cloaking Tractor Beam Mines and the Nukura Web Mines as well as the web from the Tholian Orb Weaver ship.

The mines are added, thanks.

I don't consider the Tholian Web as a true CC for two reasons:
1-It doesn't restrict the enemy's movement.
2-It's useless in PvE. When caught, enemy NPCs target them immediately due to the Line of Sight Break, so they're destroyed in a few seconds.

Are pets included? Danube and Yellowstones are pretty strong controllers, at least before the new hangar revamp.

I didn't include pets for one reason.

They don't have many differences with their powers, usually it's just a standard BOFF power or an altered version, or just named differently.

1. Well... It does because you cannot fly out of it until it is destroyed or collapses.
2. Well that part is true.

I see you have Tykens Rift listed as a control power, yet that ability has no holding or restricting effect on it's targets. It falls under the energy drain category along with Energy Siphon and Viral Matrix. Viral Matrix is more or less within the energy drain category, but it does disable engines for a significant duration. Remember though that it can be used in AoE via system engineers from the reinforcement duty officer pack.

Also photonic shockwave is an AoE disable as well as a crowd control counter. It will knock out tractor beam, tractor beam repulsors, eject warp plamsa, vent theta radation, evasive maneuvers, and a few others. Chroniton Mines and Torpedoes (especially when used with Torpedo Spread) are also very good PvE crowd control abilities. Tricobalt torpedoes and mines are also control abilities, the high yield torpedo version creates an AoE disable field on detonation. The temporal disruption device is also a single target crowd control ability, and a multiple target crowd control ability when used with high yield. The three piece Temporal Warfare set ability, Temporal Inversion Field, slows targets in a 5km radius significantly.

There are also several abilities with a chance to slow and disable a the target, the Elachi torpedo and the Chroniton Dual Beam Bank to name a few items, but none of them provide reliable crowd control.
