Hi all,

We all know that fed players don't like playing a small, agile glass cannon of a ship. But why?
With the current pvp system in place, it's a zerg fest. Glass cannons don't last long when tab targeted.

Any ideas on how to improve the escort class?

Birds of pray are fine, due to battlecloak & players that know how to dps. High weapons and engines, low shields and aux. In for the burst, out for the kill.
Also using the range of enemy players, knowledge of who and what's around you will help.

On top of that, what other abilities could the escorts have. Because let's not forget about the raptor class. As well as the lack of fed DPS ships.

Maybe a tactical skill to decrease damage taken from players within a 10km range, but cannot attack or use other BO abilities whilst under the duration of this "damage resist".
This is a similar ability to rogue classes in warhammer. It was a zergy game in RvR. To help stealthers get the kill and get out alive. They had a pbaoe damage debuff, debuffing damage taken from enemies affected unless they activated an ability / attacked.

Another idea could be to create false images of the ship. The ship would split into 3 (or so it would seem). Similar to the mages mirror image ability in WoW.
From the enemies perspective, the once lone ship, would become 3. Alone you could easily tell which was the origional vessle. In a situation where your targeting the nearest target after a kill, it could be any. Each mirror image will take X damage before their sensors realize it's a fake sensor reading.

But the ideas don't have to stop there. Please brainstorm.

I welcome the comments and i hope we can all help improve gameplay in STO.

Honestly I find it ridiculous that only one faction has hard-wired stealth technology in a PvP environment. In any other faction-based game (WAR, WOW, what have you), one faction getting stealth would be absolutely unheard of, but here we get to hear about how it would be against "lore".

I can mount Distruptors on my SF Science Vessel... Not once has that happened in "lore". And I wouldn't suggest taking it away, either. I LIKE the variety of weapons. A Galaxy with 4x Plasma Beams+Torps? Like an Undine ship? Ludicrous. Would I change it? Of course not. It makes for varied and enjoyable gameplay.

The "lore" wouldn't be difficult to modify for it, either. The Romulan Empire is dead. The treaty that banned cloaking technology can either be remanded or simply ran out.

I agree that Escorts are no fun to play in PvP. Too easy to pick them off from cloak. I switched to Science in OB for that very reason.

I completely agree with you.

To put it into context, It's like doing WSG on WOW against an entire team of rogues. Your not going to go out alone, your going to fedball. Which is why the FvF pvp will be the ending on klings ;P. But thats another topic.

I like the idea of an engineer in a tactical seat. But that's making the best of a bad situation. It not a bad idea. It's being smart and making your own tactics to stay alive. Most will probably go eng from beta experience.

So, as i do agree, engineer in a dps ship is viable & wise. My point is that tactical officers shouldn't be forced to play cruiser because of the current tab and kill climate.

No it won't. There is a push for Klingons to do KvK only, so it will probably boil down to the rare FvK matches once the FvF pvp goes live.

A little, yes. Think you could point out in which episodes Picard says "Fire all disruptor banks!" or Janeway says "Lets lay out a minefield here"? I'd love to know where those things (that fit perfectly in the game) fit into the ST canon universe.

Enjoyment should come before rigorous canon, as Cryptic has said many times. This is one of those cases.

I remember the end of one episode where Kirk ordered Scotty to activate their new cloaking device.

After beta I was under the impression that escorts would be the most popular ship, it is by no means underpowered and is more than survivable.

If you find that you are getting taken out too quickly then you need to hang back from the main group, and perhaps make sure you're in a group with science ships and cruisers than can enhance and refill your shields.

In PvP I found I could easily survive against klingon ships and only when against 3 or more were the odds massively against me.

That's not really how the Escort class is advertised. They're supposed to be the agile damage dealers. This is true on the Klingon side, not so much on Fed side.
