Why are quantum torps seem to be the torp of choice?
I have a hard time telling the difference.
photons fire every 6 seconds and do about the same dmg.
plasma is every 8 sec and well ok they kinda suck. 33% chance for its dot is horrible compared to its lazer/cannon counterparts that apply the dot on contact.
Quants are 8 sec to shoot, what do they do that photons cannot?
They have higher "top end" damage. So you see bigger numbers a bit less often then photons, but combine that with High Yield, and it hits like a semi-truck skidding on ice into a Kia.

I do wish they do add more discriptions on the weps. I did notice that myself but never could put my finger on why they hit harder.
Look at the damage, not the DPS. DPS takes the number of times you can fire per minute, the average damage per hit, then divides it by 60. So sometimes photons show a higher DPS than quantums, but the damage number will show you if it does more per hit than photons, which in most cases it will.
Most people prefer quantums due to the fact that you will not be repeatedly firing torpedos every time it refreshes. Instead you'll use them at the best opportunity. So what do you want, a 2 second faster reload or a huge hit? When their shields are down, all it takes is that one torpedo.
It really comes down to your fighting style and what ship your flying as to which kind works for you. Faster, more agile ships, able to keep the tubes on the enemy, may be better off with Photon torpedoes. But if your only getting the occasional shot off when your enemy has no shields, then you want Quantum torpedoes for that most of the time, they have a higher burst damage.
I dont no much about numbers as far as photons go. But with quantums hitting shields youll get between 200-300 damage. When you hit hull youll see 2500-3500 thousand. Add on high yield one and you can get 2800 and 3400 in two hits. Thats why I like them.
