Personnally I don't see any reason you should even be over there . I will say you are welcome to go find out and test it.

is that automated defence battery a console of some sort, ie does it take up any weapon or console slots

All fed noobs and keyboard turners use auto fire anyways. If you're within 10k of the ball and still cloaked you deserve to get shot because it's the only skill they can muster.
