Ok so how do you switch ships, like from science vessel, escort, or cruisar?

Well, assuming that you've already been promoted to Lieutenant Commander (hit grade 11, then spend the requisite number of skill points... You'll get a mission. Sadly, there is only one ship-type available in the Lieutenant bracket, the Light Cruiser), and have already acquired your free ship (of one of those three types), if you go back to the Second Floor of the Shipyard (you may have to actually leave Stardock and then beam back down to get it to refresh the list to it's standard settings), you can just buy one of the other ship types with Energy Credits.

Then it's a simple matter of going back to the first floor shipyard room and talking to the gentleman near the console to select your currently active ship. While standing near him, you can also see the inventories and equipment of any ship you currently have under your command so you can switch equipment easier.

I think that about covers it.

additionally, while you get a free ship each grade increase, you can also purchase ships (maximum of 8 currently), and switch between them,

Thanks, you rock. There is nothing that makes this clear in game. Good and simple instructions.

# 5 Can't Find My New Ship
04-06-2015, 09:51 PM
I got my Constitution Class upgrade but when I go to "Switch Ships" it is not in the listing. My chat history shows that I received it. I have tried leaving space dock and returning, beaming down to the academy and returning, exiting and returning, and still no ship. I'm at level 10. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try visiting a Ship Selection Officer. Also, I did a guide thread (in this forum section) on how to acquire new ships a month or so ago.... you might go looking for that.
