i'd try out every class, but if you have no tac yet, get one. The ship type very much depends on what you like best, i mean the andorian ship is also an option and a nice one too.

if you are a cruiser type, the oddy is ok as a support cruiser and a dps cruiser (not at the same time) tac oddy hase some teeth, although there are cruisers that have longer teeth.
vesta is your choice if you like to play the role of the "disturber" rather than the tank or dps guy...but has probably the most raw firepower compared to the rest of fed science vessels. An escort with a sci ship coat and a carrier as a mother.
the kumari is pure dmg...maneuvrable, all the advantages you want in an escort.

i rather suggest you try out all ship types (escort, cruiser, sci vessel) with your existing character before buying one of the "3 ship" sets. To find out which you like best. Cheap variants are the mirror type ships on the exchange to do that. On the one hand to increase the joy you'll have with the ship, because you already know how to handle it and on the other hand to avoid dissapointment. Otherwise you look back in remorse like others did here on the forums after they purchased a ship they had no idea how to use, or what it's strength were.

Stargazer as a class exists (T3 Cruiser choice), But Picards Constellation class the Stargazer does not.

Miranda is a T1 ship choice.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001.
If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why.
When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.

Definitly play around with the mirror ships(you'll be able to test out 6 different ships for low cost) before settling on a type, Career choice affects ground more than space but does have a bearing on space.

As a side note I've found one of the better investments fedside was the steam bundle as the blockade runner can do just about anything eng or tac heavy and the vesta is an excellent science ship(I love mine as a torp platform)

it's better to get the bundles, but ask people you know that have those ships. but in the end depends on your play style.
