I'm not excited about the Voth at all. There will be, what, a handful of missions on them? Then nothing else in the game will involve them? Undine? Elachi? Borg, unless you run the same few instances to infinity? The Dominion? True Way? Breen?
The Federation-Klingon War?
Cryptic has a tradition on using these groups or events, and doing the minimal exposure to them. Now you see them, no you don't.
So, let's say the Voth get a few missions. Maybe new 1-2 mousewheel instances for you Gerbils to run around constantly. Then what? You won't hear or deal with them again. Just like the Elachi, who really only 1 group in this game deals with them, the Romulans, who kind of reminded me are being given the Soylent Green treatment by the Elachi
The Voth like many things will be a blip on the radar and then forgotten about in the background of STO.
Just like anything important storywise, it will be forgotten about, it will not be expanded upon, it will not be fleshed out, it will not show further effects of the event or any "domino effects."
The original storyline that drove everything, started the whole mess in the STO galaxy is the Undine. The infiltration, the initial discovery from within their own ranks of the Klingon Empire of this infiltration, the purge, etc. The discovery of the massive infiltration of the Gorn Hegemony. The falling apart of the Dominion War-winning alliance of the Federation & Klingon Empire. The war between the 2 powers. The Klingons being the only major power in the quadrant to realize the total threat of the Undine and the only ones to act on them.
The Undine are a bonafide, large threat against everyone. They were taking the fight to the Borg and handling business, and not standing back on the defensive like everyone else. Their form of technology and their ships have great power and would make obvious bosses. They shapeshift, they infiltrate like changelings. They were the driving force in the breakdown of relations of the Federation & Klingon Empire, an event that shaped the course of STO's background. So the players killed a few Undine? Whoopee. There's far more where that came from, and they have the tools to give everyone a run for the money.
And Cryptic has done nothing to expand on this.
If Cryptic has done much at all with the Undine and other large dangers, the Voth will be "in" because they're new, then totally forgotten about.
Well I think the Voth are interesting and probally even more powerful than the Borg canonicly.
The Borg have only been around for mere thousands of years, but the Voth became a space faring civilization around 65 million years ago.
And it shows, because they were easily able to completely nullify all power sources on Voyager and transport the entire ship inside their city ship.
Not to mention that they also have interphase cloaking devices.
This whole game is missing a lot of stuff at the core of its gameplay, but then again it is about an entire galaxy and a few off reaching planets. When you think about, with only a few hundred people working on it to make this game, you have to at least give them credit.
Then take that credit away when you realize they're only doing it so the can get us to shoe out more money for themselves (not from me though suckahs!).
But then give them cudos that it takes a lot of money to make a game that spans a galaxy. Making games that revolve around a world is easy. Doing it about Star Trek which has thousands upon millions upon billions of endless possibilities and adventures, and you realize this game is a far more daunting task to initialize than people think.
I understand people's complaints, but maybe if we got the same degrees as the Cryptic crew we could possible speed up this games true potential so that our children may be brought into this cool game we built.
That being said, as long as I'm not bored and won't have to repeat episodes out of boredom, I'm all for it.
The big thing for the Voth for me is the Territory control game cryptic has talked about. If they manage to pull it off and make it fun, I think it could be a great addition to the game.
Also, they talked a lot about the new zones having a lot of found content. IE: No one points you where to go, you can just fly around and find stuff, like DoFF assignments, playable missions, etc... That sounds pretty cool.
But I would like to add, that you can only be exited about something new, if it's a sandbox game like EvE.
The Voth would add a 4 TeraByte patch, full of content if done right. From libraries of their history, the dinosaur itself and their technologies, to peacemaking interactions, trade routes or even a formed alliance against the Borg and Spezies 8472.
Maybe they would allow it to upgrade your ship with their technology for special tasks, or maybe for ever - but then STO would also need another balacne system and not this scissor stone paper system.
Don't expect too much. Like many said, a featured episode, and then forgotten.
