I run an Engineer in an Armitage. It actually tanks pretty well. The Engineers "Miracle Worker" gives you a nice hull regen when needed.
I love nice long walks in the country.
Especially if they're taken by people who annoy me!

Being an Engineer just means that you are more durable in your ships compared to other Captains with Rotate Shield Frequency, Miracle Worker, and Engineering Fleet. Any Captain can pilot any ship and do well with it. Just that Engineers won't do as much damage in an Escort as a Tactical Captain just like a Tactical Captain won't be as durable as an Engineer in an Escort.

I've read in several places, and I agree, that crossing up captains and ships (tacs in cruisers, and engineers in escorts; I have no idea about Science ships...) is an effective strategy that, rather than concentrating all your strengths, makes the ships more effective and versatile in general.

Yes, as already stated, engineers will be more durable in cruisers, and tac captains will be more pew-pew-ey in escorts; but, personally, I prefer a more damaging cruiser and a more durable escort, rather than putting all my eggs in the one basket. I'm still new, but I?m having fun with a tac Galaxy (I know, I know...) and an Engi currently in a Defiant... [Note also, what I say is all PVE. Not a PvPer, myself.]

Neat thing is, with some of the cheaper mirror ships, one can experiment with both options without a ridiculous amount of disruption...

Eng in an escort is a great way to learn how to pilot and fly it, especially the more nimble escorts. The engineer is more forgiving which helps you not get neg'd out in the fact that you are much more squishy than in a cruiser.

This is how I learned as my first character is an engineer and after much fun in various cruisers I made the change to a Defiant and found it much harder to stay alive. But later on a made a Tac captain as I wanted higher dps.

I have one too. Why do they lock missions in difficulties that are impossible with your level's best equipment? "Saturday's Child", for instance. I have the best of everything, and it is impossible! Why?!
