Well if you want to take a shortcut, the devs place the current reputation gear on tribble for playtesting. You can get the web mines, space sets, and weapons for a "try before you buy" experience. The Omega Force contact on Deep Space Nine grants these items on the Tribble Test Server. To copy a character to tribble test server, use this link http://sto.perfectworld.com/community/tribble-test

After a character is copied, you should see a Tribble Test Server option in your Star Trek Online launcher. Patch up the latest Tribble Test build, and you can make playtests in Ker'rat or Borg Red Alerts (Sometimes STFs if enough people are on).

I'd heard of tribble servers but really didn't know if just anyone could use them or how that worked, thanks!

Mines in ESTFs are worthless. The mining lasers are too weak to use on the solid, well-built and high HP hulls that the Borg have. The dilithium you get from trying to mine the Borg is a lot less than you would get as a completion for the reward. Furthermore, I find remans and horta make the best miners, but even then they aren't that good against a fully aggroed and buffed line of enemy borg.

Miners tend to get purple lung after working in the dilithium mines after a while, and the medical costs needed to cover their healthcare treatment far outweigh any reward you would get from doing ESTFs. You should really just stick to using beams/cannons and torpedos.

No, I didn't read your wall of text, why do you ask?

LOL!! That's why I re-posted this document in multiple sections... Which I hope is helpful. I hear medicaid covers purple lung...

A lot of missing or wrong information for example photon mines do not take systems offline. No info on mines effects like Quantums moving faster with larger explosion radius. Photon have a longer trigger distance and extra stealth and all the rest you missed. You use DMGx3 but last time I checked DMG was broken and doesn’t work on mines. Then there are the mine types you missed like Quantum or Tachyon Mines but I guess that's as you have not used them. You said photon are the highest dps mine. Surly Plasma and Quantum are higher on a mine based ship.

Photon mines have a shorter deployment cooldown over quantum. Also, [DMG] does work with mines, but [CrtH] or [CrtD] are usually considered to be more valuable. Tachyon Mines are meh given the double nerf Cryptic gave them after the feedback.

____I was pretty clear about the fact that this was limited to my usage and my experiences with my build.

____You are correct about the photons not taking systems offline, I'll edit that out. I must have confused them with something else. Thank you!

____I did not address triggering distance and I've never really looked at blast radius since the goal is to drop them point blank on your target, and your primary targets are single large ships/objects. But yes, those could make a difference in how you use them if anyone wanted to explore that.

____Photons mines have a higher base dmg rating than plasmas of the same mark/bonus. Plasmas may do more dmg if you include the proc, but I wasn't. And Quantum dmg is higher, but I don't use them. I'll change the wording.

____I don't really remember why I haven't used the quantums. If I recall correctly, I tried them and they shared a cooldown with tricobalts. They do receive 2 fewer mines in each level of DPB than their regular counterparts. A DPB spread give you 14 instead of 16.

____Now that I'm thinking about it, I never really considered cooldown times either. The major consideration is the DPB cooldown. So I never really concerned myself with the individual mine cooldowns.

The short deployment is why Photons do less DPS for mine ships well in some cases. x2 quantum mines will out DPS x2 Photon. As for DMG I just went on exchange and fitted DMG and none DMG mines and all damage was the same. So I think DMG is still broken.
