I have a Galaxy Dreadnought. It's my baby, and I love it. At this point in my time playing, I'm pretty far from getting good stuff to be a decent threat (I'm at Tier Two rep. Not bothering until I'm Tier 5). I'm trying for a phaser build to strengthen the spinal lance as well as the beam arrays themselves. Buying phaser stuff is a nightmare, all the good stuff on the exchange is horrifyingly expensive.
My question, should I keep spending fleet credits on weapons and stuff to make my Gal Dread better? Or save up 200,000 Fleet Credits and get the Oddy Star Cruiser?
I don't even know what kind of build to run on it. It's such an annoyance getting fleet weapons... Maybe use what one of my friends in the fleet use and run Antiproton.
I don't want to give up my Galaxy. I love that ship, flaws and all. I can deal with the problems. It'll be my number two ship if need be, compared to be the oddy.
I am a Tactical captain. Say what you will about Escorts, the best one I have dies real easy(I have both mirror versions if the ships you can get at Admiral), and I can't afford the good stuff. Getting that dreadnought used up about all the spare money I had, and the C-store goodies are way out of my pricerange. Escorts are great for cannons, and turning, but that's all the appeal they hold for me. Annoying soap-bubble hulls. Borg tractor beams become scary weapons...
Cruisers give me the resilience I like, so that's why I ask.
The 9 console Odyssey wouldn't be any of an improvement and is a waste of money. Really if you want to stick to non-lockbox cruisers, you have 3 options.
Odyssey 3-Pack: Same speed as your Gal-X, similar firepower (minus the lance), but better shields and much more versatility with the universal boffs, plus its a 10-console ship. Also has the most comfy captain's chair (good ergonomics )
Excelsior: The most nimble cruiser the Federation has, great offensive platform. The 3 engineering ensigns can be kinda annoying, and personally the looks bug me (looks so out of place in 2409), but for a Tac captain wanting to do a gun platform thats still a cruiser, it excels. Plus the transwarp, and you can get the fleet version with only a T3 shipyard, so added bonuses besides.
Regent: Not quite as flexible or durable as the Odyssey, or quick as the Excelsior, but occupies a balance between them while carrying an excellent BOFF layout. Also many DPS-oriented captains consider the fleet version to be the best beam platform available (short of the Monbosh), as it can be stupidly lethal with the right setup.
All are very good ships, mostly coming down to personal preferences and playstyle. None quite have the coolness factor of the Gal-X, but in terms of cold math they're all its superior. Any one is a good choice.
The Odyssey Star Cruiser is the free version that was granted last year during the Anniversary Event. If you are going to get the Odyssey, then get the bundle for 5000 Zen or better yet during the sale. So if it is a choice between upgrading the Galaxy Dreadnought with Fleet equipment or getting the Odyssey Star Cruiser, then go for upgrading the Galaxy Dreadnought.
An idea would be to wait for the next Featured Episode and get the Alien Carrier before you try another ship. The Alien Carrier should be out next month. Carriers can have more hull than cruisers and you have the added benefit of hangar pets taking the aggro off of you so they are more resilient than most ships. The best part about it is that it is free. The only problem with Carriers is that they can be a pain with the ISE since you need to destroy all the generators on a transformer at once and not controlling the pets properly will cause them to destroy it too soon.

This intrigues me. Do you have a link with more information about this?
If I had the spare cash, I'd get the Oddy 3 pack, because having a Tac oddy that shucks it's Chevron AND spawns the Aquarius sounds really cool to me, but it's gonna be years before I can drop 50 bucks on that, and just thinking about trying to gather the Dil needed to earn 5000 zen just makes me want to quit the game. (Serious money issues with me. I only started playing this when my roomates got internet, and I saw advertising saying STO was F2P
I would also like to get the Galaxy Retrofit, or whichever one has the Saucer sep module, because I still retain some hope that the devs might one day work out the kinks in the code, so I can make the Saucer on my Dread fall off. I am a fan of the Galaxy series... I digress, though

Here's the rub friend, those two abilities lock the other out so you get Chevron Separation or the Aquarius. And many people say the Aquarius is a bit rubbish.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001. If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why. When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.
Hey, I run a Galaxy Dreadnought. I am also a Tac Captain. I suggest you buy fleet weapons to improve your Dread. I have almost all fleet stuff, and my ship is awsome. Use the stuff from your starbase and your dilithium mine. I got armor that improved my turnrate 20%.
I am working on giving mine fleet weapons. I'm at two fleet Phaser arrays at the moment, after lucking out on a purple Mk XI (or was it Mk XII) Dual Beam Array. My goal is to give it all fleet weapons.
The fleet I'm part of still has a low-level starbase, and we're just now getting our Dil mine to Tier 1.
Getting anything other than Fleet Weapons right now is impossible for me.
@dknight0001: Ah, okay. Disappointing. Think I'd rather have the Chevron separation, then.
Firstly, be proud! You're part of the few, the stubborn, the Federation Dreadnought Captains.
Don't be so quick to dismiss the Elite Fleet phasers; they provide a constant shield heal, allowing you to free up slots to do more damage. For example, I use EWP3, EngTeam3, and DEM2 which pretty much all my non-EP and non-ABatt slots used up, leaving only TSS2 to be my shield heal...
Fleet will also net you Elite Warp Cores and Advanced Neutronium consoles. Again, vital parts of your build.
Outfitting a Dreadnought Cruiser is no easy task, which is why the journey is worth it. It is worth even more when a Klink BoP sees you as an idiot, then gets killed by a well-placed EWP followed up by a buffed-up Phaser Lance.
You'd probably need to learn how to fly the cruiser too. Like making use of powersliding to come out of an attack run to broadside a downed shield facing. Or using engine batteries, dilithium surplus, EM, and 1/4 impulse to spin around like a top.
I'd have to admit that if you're not a Romulan, you're excused from being bad at PVP. Therefore, don't worry about using your dreadnought in pvp and performing terribly. EVERYONE has a problem in pvp.
So, hang in there! With enough time and practice, you'd be one of us yet.
Without trying to go too far off topic, I just wanted to cngratualte the OP and those who've supported him in this quest to hang on to sed ship because he likes the genre.
In my (often irrelevant) opinion, I find that there are waaaaaaaaayyyyy too many great ships which just flat-out lose their usefulness upon arriving at end-game level content. And although the retrofits and fleet ships make somewhat of an attempt to address the issue, I find that in most cases it's just not enough.
Anyway, I personally don't fly the Galaxy-X, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE seeing them in-game!
"We?ll keep the settings on stun and talk about the exclusive new alien ship that we are working on as a special reward for completing the new Feature Episode releasing in September.
This ancient, full-Carrier vessel uses subspace technology and was created by an alien race that may be related to the Iconians. As captains venture into the new feature episode, they?ll learn more about where this ship comes and get a chance to captain it in combat."
The devs just posted yesterday that it has been delayed so it is not coming in September.
