I would like to say first off congratz to the winners. However I do agree with the rest of the community on this one. I seems like Cyptic feel asleep on this one. Poor decision guys I personally expected alot more out of you on this. You guys claim that you have reviewed tons of information on Star Trek but yet with your decisions here it does not seem you have as much as you think you have. I know this is ulitmately a small deal in a big picture, but if such a small thing can be fouled up so completely I wonder if more important things have also been made in such an, assumed, lazy manner. Come on Cryptic use your brains we are getting ready to pay you to use.
I agree - I can't believe those were the best names they could pick. There were a lot of better names for the escort and cruiser that other people submitted. I thought the person who picked Roddenberry for the science ship would have won that one, but beat by Destiny? You've got to be kidding me...
Honestly, I don't care that I lost. What I do care about is having lost, and witnessing others who have lost to such lame names. I submitted good names, and others did as well. Some of those others I liked better than my own. For all those great names to have lost to ship names that are as simplistic as "Dog", "Cat", and "Owl"... It's really pathetic Cryptic.
Actually, I think they are using the other definition of DERVISH : "One that possesses abundant, often frenzied energy"
Honestly I don't like the name Dervish.
Emissary is very fitting, and is an homage to Sisko.
Destiny seems a bit ordinary (as well as overused).
I had gone with greek gods myself (often source of many ship class names). I wanted the Dervish class to be the Athena Class. (Athena: goddess of wisdom, war, strategy, justice and skill, and heroic endeavour)
I'd be curious to see the actual numbers for people who picked "dervish". I'm betting few actually heard the word used in their entire life, and even fewer know what it means. It seems too much like some nerd at Cryptic decided to ignore the other submissions and use their own.
As for Destiny, that was one of the first names I thought of (to use for the Cruiser, not the science ship however), but I thought to myself, "no no, I can think of something more intelligent and fitting".
The names are what they are though. Luckily we can pick our own names to go on the hull.
Dervish fits perfectly, everyone going to wikipedia thinking that's the end all be all of information and getting bent out of shape because dervish=beggar really needs to look at the other uses for and meanings of the word dervish.
Dervish is also another name for a small violent storm, not quite tornado level in scope. So for an escort ship, which are small, fast and armed to the teeth to begin with, the class name is perfect. For those of you that don't like the name...well nobody is gonna force you to sit in the captain's chair of one.
Emissary fits like a glove. All of Starfleet's flagships have had a diplomacy themed class designation and this is no different.
Destiny also works well. The Federation has always been about exploration, learning new things, developing new technology and meeting new cultures. The pinnacle tier of science vessels being Destiny class only means, to me at least, that the Federation's main goal is still that of exploration and the betterment of mankind through science.
Congrats to the winners and hopefully I'll spot those super exclusive titles in-game soon.
