# 1 Dual core ATI cards..
01-13-2010, 11:45 PM
Hi.

I don't know if I am alone with this problem but I have software that monitors the GPU utilization percentage and while running STO I alt tabbed out to see how STO handles dual core graphics cards.

Usage on GPU core 1 was 98-100% and the graph showed similar numbers.

Usage on GPU core 2 was 0% and had been so for the entire time because the graph had not moved an inch.

If I close STO and start say, left 4 dead 2 or a benchmarking tool called furmark both GPU's start working @ 98-100% immidiately so there is nothing wrong with the card.

It simply seems like STO can and will only use one GPU core at the moment, yes I know we're in beta.

My setup:

AMD Phenom II 965BE @ 3,8 ghz
4gb 1333 ddr3 ram
ATi HD5970 2gb 900/1200 OC @ catalyst 9.12
Windows 7 64 bit ultimate.

you must have catalist they may only support 1 card at a time a guy was on here yesterday whos dual cards reached 90 degrees and almost fryed his cpu carefull keep an eye on your temp if you do get them both up it is a beta

I'm not sure if the 5970 activates both cores if a game isn't very demanding. I can't imagine it's stressing it much since AA isn't enabled yet.

Mine always runs on 1 core and downclocks the 2nd on older games.

CPU usage is really heavy at the moment, STO loads all 4 cores on my 3.6ghz 965 quad at about 70%, the beta client could be filled with debugging code or something though. High cpu usage and high gpu usage at the same time make for a warm PC.

My 5970 is watercooled so my temps doesnt go above 50 degrees celsius but thanks anyway.

Maybe but to me it seems more like a bug or perhaps a architectural design flaw because if the game was built to support dual core graphics cards the second core would at least be on 20% load, but no, we're talking absolute zero utilization.

mine seams fine, fans on my comp have to work a little to keep temp at 80 but nothing like they do for borderlands.
