I don't know what sort of effect is being toggled to cause this, but I'd like to know if its possible to turn it off whatever it is.

Game runs great sofar except for this minor annoyance.

Help appreciated.

I know what your talking about, and it sorta bothers me too. Usually I don't notice it tho. As far as I know the only way to turn it off is to turn the lighting quality from 'High' to 'Low' but then that makes the game kinda look like crap... or just bland.

oh and no I don't think it's cell shading, just a low resolution form or lighting. But I dunno for sure, I don't know much about that stuff.

Fixed my own problem. Seems like the option in question is called 'space-something occlusion'. Its at the near bottom of the advanced video options. When I toggled it off not only did I lose that cruddy dark smudgy stuff all over but I had a significant increase in visual quality while also getting a boost in framerate.

new settings http://i46.tinypic.com/24vv68o.jpg

My performance is better AND I get cleaner, sharper graphics. Win/win.

edit: more examples even cuz its just so much prettier

I appologize for my previous post (deleted now), which evidently offended someone, I assure you it was not meant to do such and was a joke based upon the OP's picture link which I thought amusing, my joke was even on myself to an extent, since I included an allusion to myself being crazy in it.

Again I am sorry for any offence.

I had hoped not but apparently someone was upset. Alas all I can say is "my bad" and refrain from any humor in the future, since my particular brand of it is seen as flaming apparently.

ah well live and learn. glad to hear you got the lighting thing fixed.

Thank you for bringing this up. I also noticed the "muddy" lighting (which is as good a description as any), and if the ambient occlusion isn't working correctly, then it's good that you found that that's what was causing the problem, because it does have an impact on performance having it enabled. No sense turning it on when it's not doing anything good, especially when this game can halt to a crawl when enough action is onscreen (in space alone, my FPS varies between 130fps and 20fps )
