Which offer more bang for their buck? I own both, and tend to stick with the drones on my scimitar vs the scorpions on my arkif, but I was curious. I like the survivability of the drones, but those scorpions have such lovely heavy torpedoes. Thoughts?
My impression, from looking at both, is that the Drone's beam arrays come out on top.
Scorpions are sort of in the same bag as the Aquarius Escort: they've got nice frontal weapons, but the AI doesn't know how to use them. Whereas, during this First Contact Event, the Enterprise-F's Aquarius pet was considered far more effective due to it sporting beam arrays.
End result: a pet with beam arrays will use them with far more frequency than a pet with frontal cannons, frontal torp and a piddly turret.
More to the point, the key is knowing which pets to use in which missions. Heavy Plasma Torpedoes track cloaked ships, which is quite useful for tracking Donatra when she cloaks. By watching their flight direction, I always know exactly where Donatra will decloak. So for Khitomer, use Scorpions, by all means. But for Infected and Cure, Scorpions will near always be trumped by Swarmers.

This. If I am doing missions I know will have a lot of torp or BFAW spam then I use my Runabouts for they survive longer, I think in this case drones would be better. If I am going to a mission I know that there isn't that much of it then I break out the scorps.
For the Scimitar? Easy choice. Elite Drones every day, any day of the week, any possible hour, minute, or second. It's not even a contest.
You can choose to have Elite Drones in any type of circumstance and they will be effective.
They do not die quickly like the Elite Scorpions when someone is looking their general direction.
They do not die when there's something like Grav Well in the same universe.
Their firepower is not completely and embarassingly neutered when NPCs are present that prefer to use AOE abilities like FAW, GW, TR.
Elite Drones have good survivability, good firepower. Big deal since the Scimitar has only 1 hangar, and these units maximize what you get for it. Elite Scorpions on the other hand are more circumstantial, and their real benefit comes against targets that don't like to move much and don't like to shoot much, and hope they don't do AOE.
You do not have to remove Elite Drones because there's something that negates them, unlike Elite Scorpions.
