That really isn't correct. The Beams skill applies to both Phaser and Disrupter beams (as well as the other flavors of beam weapons). Likewise, the Cannons skill improves both Phaser and Disruptor cannon weapons. Starting at Lt Commander, you can specialize in more specific weapon types.

No they're not. Look under Starship Energy Weapons, Starship Disruptor Weapons is 3 tiers over with 3 solid pips in the block. It is a Commander level skill.

You're right, disruptors are beams too. Like you said at Commander your can put points in phasers, disruptors, or both.

See, in Beta, Disruptors all stated on there that they had a 10% chance to decrease damage resistance, yet when I went to buy some last night, I notice they didn't say that anymore.

Is that buff now reserved for Klingons only or something, as I do see the Phaser buffs listed.

Also when it comes to using Ground Weapons, phaser weapons all have that extra chance to hold, while Disruptor weapons appear to have no additional benefits like that for my Fed characters.

Phasers disrupting enemy systems isn't to be understimated. It happens more than is typically obvious, because only shield stoppage is obvious. To really benefit from this effect you should have multiple phaser weapons, but in any case, I prefer them to disruptors. Also, um, Disruptors are illegal in the Federation... still trying to figure out why they're so freely available, and at Federation vendors, no less.

So THAT'S what's been bothering me about disruptors!! They ARE illegal in the federation, aren't they? In OB my shi'kar was outfitted with disruptors and I couldn't figure out why that bothered me so much besides the fact they weren't canon... Thanx for clearing that up for me!

In a time of war, nothing is illegal. You use what you can get.
