Most of the episodes I remember of Star Trek did not involve starship combat, or if they did they had a large amount of noncombat stuff in them as well. What happened to exploring, talking to the colonists and space energy whales, outwitting Mirror Sulu with sex appeal and klingon saboteurs with a tribble.

Players who chose a tactical ship style can have all these shoot em ups. Science types should be offered more exploration or science based missions, and engineers missions more geared towards infiltration or sabotage maybe.

We can still have combat missions but it shouldnt be EVERY MISSION. I have had one mission where I go around and talk to the colonists then take a quiz to make sure I actually read the text, that was it? Really? Are you SERIOUS? I have another coming up to escort a diplomat but the mission text as much as says Ill be fighting off klingons the whole way.

Combat in this game isn't even fun with all the lag involved and enemies ganging up on us, and it isnt what I thought this game would be about. What every single episode of Star Trek begins with: Boldly go, explore strange new worlds and new civilizations. "And shoot them " wasnt in that list.

The problem is that many players consider that "non combat" = boring. Jack Emmert said in his last chat that Cryptic will implement diplomacy and minigames

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the topic, but according to the timeline, the episodes you remember were dated back when the Federation/Klingon peace treaty was still in effect.

They may have put more "shoot em ups" in the game because according to the timeline, the Federation/Klingon peace treaty has dissolved and were now faced with war in all directions.

Maybe I'm wrong, just an observation.

Also like it was stated by Delazure, most people consider those "stop and smell the roses" missions to be boring.

I don't mind if the mission involves a little combat, especially considering how much fun it is. Just as long as there's a reason to the fighting and there's no lack of story for those who actually care to read it.

Kill 8 squadrons of enemies isn't as fun as protecting Miral Paris (believed to be the kuvah'magh by some) from being abducted by Klingon soldiers.

This is a huge universe sure the feds are at war with the Klingons but must we fight and kill everything we run across out in space. I really enjoyed the few missions where you have to team up with the Klingons to fight the Undine. Something other than go kill 5 of x patrols would be nice.

Will more non-combat gameplay be developed? Sure thing.

But the developers have made no claims that this ISN'T a time of war. Being what it is, war requires 'every able bodied starfleet officer and ship for active duty'

I guarantee you that if a US Army base comes under heavy enough attack that the medics and mechanics will also pick up a rifle to defend their territory.

Just try to keep it in perspective, this game will develop, but if you need to have some 'reason' to fight all the time, assume that Admiral Quinn has told you 'fight or be discharged'. It will get better in the future.

One thing to keep in mind about TOS (touched on in some of the books/articles I've read on it) and to some extent the later shows, is that special effects cost a lot of money. There weren't wall-to-wall space ship battles on the shows in part cause of the cost of the effects. Likewise, endless ground combat phaser bottles put a serious dent in the effects budget.

It's not a constraint in STO. Doing a non-combat mission doesn't save them any money.

While I'd like more interesting non-combat stuff, I don't think ones where we run around a barren landscape clicking "glowies" or we solve a murder mystery (re: Accidents Happen) that just involves being "led by the nose" down a linear path to the same culprit every time fit the bill. I'm not suggesting they hurl a Rubik's Cube at us, but some sense of discovery or "player participation/deduction" would be a lot more interesting imho.

To me an interesting non-combat mish will get you involved in reading the text, clues, solving something that doesn't always have the same solution etc. Maybe build suspense or genuine mystery. If it's just something that has us frantically clicking because we "just want it to be over with so we can go back to pew-pew-pew," then it's not working.

same reason i dont do explore missions.... hopping from anomaliy to anomaly to scan it and hope i get a mission is dul dull dull. I can just do a patrol and get the same missions without the pretense of zoning and scanning. Or getting one of those deliver X supplies.....

Today i was having very much fun with this game until i stumbled upon a mission called "Kuvah'magh" Everything is fun until i got to part where i need to enter building where supposed peace conference would be held.

First showstopper. Miral tolds me that Kligon captain has hostages. KLINGONS DO NOT TAKE HOSTAGES, they are no covards. But then i just thought that it is only a lure to get me to talk to him.. Well then i head to the building, enter and

STopper! My science officer recommends that i should kill klingons to rescue our own diplomats..

Whats the point here? I am forced to be an idiot that only knows solutions bassed on a force. I was really looking forward on this mission but why you had to make it AGAIN some of those very untrekked missions where you slay everyone?

In my opinion missions like these need to be changed ASAP!

We are at War.
This is the future not a TV show.
