Shard is also the word used in place of server in Ultima Online.
I wonder if the person that sent the announcement used to work EA/OSI.

You couldn't find a synonym for "shard"? ..as in shard of glass? Fragment, partition, piece, segment? When a database is partitioned or segmented, those segments are often called shards.
