I had assumed that since you can only fly one ship at a time that you can pass the name down to all your ships, but I'm not sure if other players can have the same ship name as you, I hope not (for obvious marketing and PR related reasons -cough cough- )

Apparently ship names are NOT unique. I've seen at least two other ships flying around with the exact same name as me. Not sure if this applies to actual toon names as well or not. Given I picked a name that would be fairly popular like USS Serenity but wouldn't have if I knew it wasn't going to be unique to me. So when I get my next ship will have to think of something a little less popular I guess.

In one word: Yes

Long explanation :
Every single player in the game can name their ship the same thing. For instance, there is no stopping 50.000 players to all name their favourite ship the USS Enterpirse. The way shipnames are distinguished is by the account name prefix (for instance: U.S.S. Enterprise@RipShredder)

Other players can have the same ship and character name as you. You can only have one ship of the same name per character, so if you want to pass down the name of your ship you have to rename your old ship first.

Ship names are not unique...except on your own account.

Captain Roberts of the USS Piehole and Captain James of the USS Piehole can both exist

Ships Registry are the unique names, I think.

However if you want to name your Cruiser the name as your Miranda...then rename the Miranda first or discharge it. Then you can name the Cruiser. (just an example)

Actually I don't think that is true. As you can add an additional number to your NCC registry (like adding the -D to NCC 1701-D) That being said I have not tried it since STO went live.

I think for each person they can only have a ship name used once, so you can't have a cruiser and an escort named the same way in your ship list. But someone else can have a ship of the same name.

Most folks I've seen get around the limitation by adding "II" to the end or the -A, -B stuff.
