Running a few speedtests last night I'm able to download around 2000-2800kb/s but my upload is only 70-90kb/s. I download actual files in the 2mb/s range as well from appropriate sites.

I have to run the game in EU proxy and cannot complete the nettest without timeouts on the 7000 ports. My upload seems terrible and I'm wondering if that's an issue.

Coderanger, can you confirm if upload rates like this could be my issue?

Are you having lots of traffic uploading while doing the nettest and/or playing STO?

If other applications (or computers, if you have a shared internet connection) hog the upload bandwidth, you will have problems.

Unfortunately, there's no easy solution to this except for stopping the apps that upload data (like bittorrent, that's a real killer for upload bandwidth), or putting an upload cap to them.

Later edit: If you can play through the proxy but it sucks without one, then your ISP might be throttling or putting traffic on unconventional TCP ports on a low priority (STO does work using such unconventional ports), so this might also be the case.

I had no software going that would affect my upload such as bit torrent program at the time of testing. Is there an easy way to check if my ISP is throttling or putting traffic on unconventional ports? I know my friend with the same ISP (even though he lives 1000km's away) does not have to use the EU proxy and has no issues with connection or running the nettest.

Here's a link to the internet package I have from my ISP:

Mentions a speedboost. Thanks for your help. Looks like I should get up to 1mb/s upload so 60-90kb is out of whack.

1mbps means 1 megabit per second. 1byte = 8 bits
That means that your upload is actually 128kbytes/second (1024/8), so it's quite close to what you're getting.

Sorry, I don't know any method of testing if ports are being given low prio.

That is definitely very low for a "high-speed" connection :-/ Hard to say specifically if it would cause problems or not. More likely it is an indication that your uplink is highly saturated. If you are on cable, you share that uplink bandwidth with everyone on the same cable loop. With DSL it would be everyone at the same telco CO. In either case, there isn't much you can do but ask all your neighbors to stop torrenting so much porn >_<

Haha thanks for the advice. Looks like my ISP claims I get up to 15mbps DOWN and 1mbps UP. So my ISP just is giving me much Upload as that only works out to about up to 128kb/s UP that they provide me.

If you have a chance can you comment on my thread with the issues I'm having. Here: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=96430

Haven't had a reply to any of the tickets I've submitted and I'd really like to know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel for my issues. I don't want to consider cancelling but the game is unplayable right now, I'm not even sure how to go about cancelling my 12 month sub anyway. Thanks.

I'm beginning to like you. You're actually down to earth and not like devs in other mmo's

I have been playing STO while uploading 7 gigas of data at the maximum of my upload bandwidth (110 ko/s), and the game was just fine during the days I had to do this.

Thanks for the info, that helps me rule this out.
