# 1 Bird of Prey - maneuverability
02-02-2010, 03:11 AM
Well. So far I think ship combat in STO is great - it is not a frantic flight simulator / dogfight., and punching a hole in shields and then launching a bunch of torpedoes through is enormously satisfying.

Except with the bird of prey, it is like steering a bike for the first time. Basically it feels wobbly and turns quite a bit too fast. The fast turning I can live with - but it feels way too wobbly for a starship, it was odd.

I suspect escort ships in general may have that problem, though, not just the B'rel.

On other notes - the klingon uniforms in character creation - lots of options are between 'standard' and some oddish looking descriptors (NPC_Model_Only and similar names) - is that my installation or is that a common problem? That, and almost no ship customization options, etc... not too tempting. Not to mention the female klingons, who has even less variety.

On a related note, I think the developers may have forgotten one big detail:
The 'klingon' fan base community isn't hardcore PvP'ers. It's the nuts who made their own bloody language. There will be plenty of those that want to play klingons and leave in annoyance, I suspect, and no, it's not 'good riddance'.

If you think its too fast just put power to weapons/shields lowering your Aux, to me the BoP is fine, remember this is a fast raid ship which means lighter than an escort. Have you been playing Escorts on the Fed side or just cruiser/science if the latter of course its going to feel too fast but you will get used to it.

Actually, been playing Starfleet Command III, a long time ago.

But still, it seems to switch from flying straight to near full tilt immediately - and that was with power to weapons. Now, I am a horrible noob - only played the headstart and a lot of the time, the server's been down; the only other ship I've flown is the Miranda.

Which doesn't give my voice much weight, as such. Been a gamer for more than 20 years though. Still, something feels off about it.

I do notice there's a lot of nerf herders on this forum, and that is not my intent; I see no reason to make the B'rel worse. I do see a reason to make its controls more fluid.

Now imagine flying on half impulse, with lots of power in aux, + evasive maneuvers + attack pattern alpha...and the escort flies like headless chicken although its occassionaly amusing hearing "hax" in zone channel

Well the game should reward the player if he manages to get away from 5 players focus fire, its not easy and usually ends up badly for they guy who tries to run. (reward = stay alive )

but yea its pretty funny when somoene gets that max speed out of their ship the speed is awesome.

Its pretty easy actualy, there is enough abiltites to speed up and get very far in 3-4s, seeing as range greatly lowers dmg, you can pop brace for impact on those torps flying behind you...

Pop a battery, emergency power to engines I, and evasive action and enemies will only see trail behind your naceless.

I wonder if he's referring to the visual "turning cue". When you're flying with both mouse buttons pressed down, if you move your mouse at all, the ship banks as if it's in a full turn. This is just to let you know that a turn input was made. On a normal or slower ship, this isn't a big deal, but on a super fast, super turn rate ship maybe it unconsciously forces some to try and correct it and they end up spinning all over the place.
In fact, flying Mirandas and tier two ships, it has annoyed me. I'm pointing my ship, cursor at an anomali (I need to learn how to spell that), and my ship is constantly jerking side to side although I'm barely correcting a degree. A fix would be to only activate the roll when a turn of more degrees is entered.
This hasn't been important enough for me to comment or complain about. But never underestimate a person's ability to use someone elses problems to their benefit!!! (grin)
