I am considering rolling an Engineer Captain, but would like to keep a Science Ship.

Would this gimp me in space combat?

If so, how?

Not at all, really your Captain class has more effect on ground play than in space.

You would have the science ships shields, and the engineer abilities to make it a bit more survivable.

What they said. Your class affects more ground combat.

BUT it also helps in space. I'd recommend using an engineer while commanding an escort. You get the escort's DPS and the engineer shield habilities.

Emergency power to shields and Shield Remodulation buff your shields for 30 seconds, and you can invest on them so that the cooldown lasts only 45 seconds. More than enought to survive any alpha strike.
