talked to a nice fellow in game the other night who was saying even tanking in a cruiser is challenging because of the poor turn rate you cannot switch which side your enemy is hitting you on fast enough to maximize shield usage.

Is this correct?

When the borg start beaming crew off your science vessel, you'll wish you had the large crew of a cruiser

It takes some getting used to the sluggish turn rate, but experienced cruiser captains like myself will make use of the throttle controls, particularly quick bursts of reverse to turn.

Now if you were fighting a smart and very maneuverable enemy, I could see how this could be done, but in the PvE and PvP content I have done, you should be able to turn quick enough to counter the big attacks.

And there is always Evasive Maneuvers if you need to turn really, really fast.

Actually, I enjoy, and play all three. I'm putting most of my points into Cruiser this go round, but I found that not putting points into Sci/Esc doesn't mean that you can't use them effectively.

Sometimes I feel like flying the escort, sometimes I want to play with the science vessel, other times I just feel like soaking up damage and broadsiding. <---- especially when I'm fighting Romulans,

Not to mention that you can divert powerr to one side of your shields, which should help to alleviate turning issues.

Fundamentally, though, cruisers shouldn't be tanking single ships. They should be rotatng through targets, picking the most opportune firepower to use at any given time.

Yeah, you actually have a lot of options to keep yours shields up since turning to use a different shield side isn't as easy:
- Use side-specific shield boost commands vs balance all
- Evasive Maneuvers
- Shift power to AUIX in the balance commands (which is bindable to a key btw)
- Pop an engine battery
- Use any of the shield boost/resist powers from engineering or science

As a cruiser captain you also start to get pretty good at "flat scissors" style maneuvering to try and switch between side broadsides and a forward/aft torpedo launcher. I keep torps forward and aft to give me a better chance at getting a shot in when my broadsides/beam overload wear down a shield.

Get both; in OB by around LtCom6 I had all 3 of the T1 ships (escort, science, cruiser) and a Danube, although I had to sell everything in my bank and inventory to get the Danube before the end of beta. I plan to buy a 2nd ship this time around, and cycle between Science and Cruiser.

The only price you pay is in having to make a 2nd LT, but that wasn't a big deal.

Only true at newbie levels. As you go up the tiers, cruiser get more and more weapon slots and the engineering slots to keep them powered.

Now having said that, Science vessels don't always need as much DPS to kill an opponent due to all the debuffs. But going by pure DPS numbers, nothing beats a cruiser for sustained DPS.

I chose Cruiser for 2 reasons over anything else.

1. I LOVE THE CONNIE!!!!
2. Cruisers have 2 engineer slots. So that means I can have 3 total engineering skills...I use Engineering team, and 2 E-power to shields. (1 and 2) This may not be totally necessary, but I like having the second E-Power to Shields as a backup just in case.

In truth...I looked at the choices for Escort and Science at Tier 2...and was not impressed.

Hell, to be honest...I am not impressed with many of the designs for tier 3 and above that I've seen so far.

I think the Akira is an ugly piece of junk (simmer down akrialovers...simmer down....it's just my opinion) as well...

The cruiser line is just the ones I dislike the least...except the Connie. I've always loved the Connie refit. I am so happy they included that design.

Never was a fan of the way the Intrepid, Galaxy, Sovvie, or any of the new "sleek" ships. I didn't even like the Excelsior when I first saw that one.

My love for the Connie refit has nothing to do with Kirk or the Enterprise...I just love the design of it.

So the majority of my reasoning is aesthetic, but also the 2 engineers.
