Seems like many people farm fleet actions or that crystaline spawn, and reap the high end items for their ships. What I've noticed are the majority of the top 6-10 people getting the rewards are DPS class ships (ie. escorts). Which makes me wonder what the real benefit was of rolling a Cruiser. I will be 21 soon, and may ditch the cruiser and go with a more DPS ship if this is how the game / loot is going to end up playing out.
If it is higher levels farming low level content, not much you can do about it except join them.
For people of the appropriate level, tier 2 ships? The escort damage advantage is not that big. The problem is that cruisers and science ships don't adapt to maximize their damage output throughout the course of the event. And so the gap becomes much bigger than it really should be and they have no chance of winning.
For example, most cruisers use torps. Not a smart choice. Cruisers don't turn on a dime, so you cannot easily use the torp. And when you can, you take your weapons on the other side out of the action, costing you DPS. They do not do much damage against shields. And once shields are down, well, there's a decent chance the target will go boom before the torps arrive. What they should be running is 4 single beam arrays and some EPS Flow Regulators.
There's a few other things like that as well. What to target, when to engage, and so on.
Suffice it to say, when I go into a fleet action (other than Crystalline entity, that one is borked), I expect to win in my cruiser. And I typically do.
When they add higher level fleet actions, then it'll be a bigger issue. Cruiser turn rates get worse and the dps gap widens. But for the ones they have, the biggest issue is how people play, not what they play.
So what? I also don't condone the farming but the blue items that drop do absolutely minimal to the effectiveness of your character/ship. Have you looked at the stats on the blue items? Add them up and you'll see it does almost nothing to your gear or your ship.
