Sorry in advance for any mistakes in my information. I'm stuck at work right now and don't have access to all the information I'd want for this. Anyways, when you're training skills for your character, at Lieutenant level there is a generic "improved hull/turning/speed" skill for all skips.

Then at Lt. Commander it splits between the three ship types (Cruiser, Science Vessel, Escort). If I were to put 9 ranks into say... Cruiser, then I know it will stack with the base level one I trained at Lieutenant. However, when I rank up and get access to a Heavy Cruiser, will the points I put into "Cruiser" help me at all?

If they don't stack, then shouldn't I just wait until I get to max rank (and decide on my final type of ship) before putting points into this type of skill?

And, on a side note, how do you guys/girls feel about this skill overall? Worth the points? Not worth the points? Partially level it or go for the full 9?

Thanks in advance for any input you care to share. 8-)

My understanding is that the Lt. Comm ship skills are generic and stackable - "Cruiser" applies to all Cruiser-type ships, including Heavy Cruiser.

Also, you may already be aware of this, but just to reiterate: You have to spend your skill points somewhere in order to ascend in rank. Your "grade" (Lt. 5 vs Lt. 7, for example) is based on skill points accumulated, but your "rank" (Lt. vs. Lt. Comm, for example) is based on skill points spent.

Starship Command should be the first skill everybody maxes out (Yes, don't leave it at 6 or 7), that's all I'm saying. It stacks with any other ship class specific skill.

After that get the one you know you will be using the ship type. This stacks with any ship class specific skill because it says any [class] type of ship, and with Starship Command.

After that some people say don't invest in any other ship skills except in Adminral because you level out of the type of ships in between [ship] Captain and the last ones. If you do it right, there should be enough points to max your last tier ship skill (Which will need to be respected if they increase the level cap and add more ship types) and 7 in another Admiral skill. Admiral skills are incredibly expensive and you only get 8000 points to spend with the skill cap.

So, if I got 9 points into Starship Command at Lieutenant, 9 points into Cruiser Captain at Lt. Commander and 9 points into Heavy Cruiser Captain at Commander, then all of these would stack to benefit my Heavy Cruiser?

What about Captain rank and I move up to Exploration Cruiser. I know Starship Command would help, and Cruiser Captain would help (based on what was posted here). Would Heavy Cruiser Captain benefit me at all at that point? Or would it be smarter to just go Starship Command and Cruiser, then wait until Admiral before investing into any more of this skill set? Like, no points into Heavy Cruiser and Exploration Cruiser, then put points into whichever Tier 5 cruiser I choose?

Sorry for still being a bit confused. Thanks so much for the help.

The T2 (LTC) skills will effect later tiers of ships. I.E. if you put 9 points in to Cruiser Captain, that will effect you in a Cruiser, Heavy Cruiser, Battle Cruiser, etc.

However, the T3/T4/T5 skills don't stack or work on later ships, only on that current tier. So if you put 9 ranks in Heavy Cruiser Capt, it only works while you fly a Heavy Cruiser.

The only reason I maxed out 9 ranks in Heavy Escort is to get the ability to train my BOffs with Attack Pattern Omega III. I don't think you get a max rank benefit for the other T3 ship skills.

See this is a tough choice. People need to ask themselves, "Do I want the BO skills, knowing full well Heavy Escort and Tactical Escort can be leveled out of, or do I want to save the points?" Tough choice for Escorts, since they get trainable skills out of their Commander and Captain skills while others don't.

What you could try is max them, train the skill, and wait until respecs become possible. You can try respecing the unused ship skill and see if you can keep the trained BO skill even though you can no longer train it.
