In Sector Space there are two types of enemy contacts - the red swirling ball that is always going to be a boatload of enemies, and what look like individual ships. For the latter, how do you engage those?

those randomly attack you and become the swirling ball. They don't seem to attack higher level ships though.

Just approach them and you may get a contact box from the contact to engage them! but ofcourse if your in a Commander Vessel and your in the Sirius Block they will try to move away from you.

fun fact Commanders can still get overwhelmed in Sirius deep space, case in point; if you're in an escort do not attempt to take on 3 Negh'vars, 2 battlecruisers, 3 raptors, and 4 Birds of Prey. It will not end well for you, even if they are all -18.

Yeah I was wondering if it was level dependent. Right now I'm Lt Cmdr and I could not engage any of the single ship enemy contacts. The only ones I got the option to contact were the swirly ball ones.

So are those 'single ship enemy contacts' actually single ships like the graphic implies?

No, they're exactly the same as the swirling balls. As was mentioned, they turn into the swirling balls when you engage them. The reason they're shown as a ship is so they can move towards targets, whereas the swirling balls are static.

Form a group, I rolled with 4 of my guild mates and we rolled that for 2 hours. It was a blast, several close calls, we learned how to use abilities better for supporting other ships (ie. Engineering Crew is great for repairing the near dead tank) and it was an all around blast. Best/Worst moment, 6 Negh'vars and tons of support ships.... and for some reason the new spawns kept floating closer though they weren't aggro'd till they floated next to someone and bam! Continuous chaos for 30 mins at a time. Tons of fun....

Be careful and be ready.

I ended up loading in with half shields cause SIX klingon ships were attacking me AS I WAS LOADING.

Yes no fun.

Speaking of defend the sector missions, I run them, clear three of them, but they never seem to disappear from Sulu's offered mission list? is this working as designed? Or a bug?

My understanding is they are repeatable quests.
