# 1 Some Stupid Questions
02-12-2010, 10:22 PM
Been playing a week, love the game so far (only a few gripes - Memory Alpha? ugh)

But I have been saving up some questions...

1) Are all ships THAT sluggish and slow and hard to turn or pivot? Would a different controller set up make cruiser ships more responsive? Currently using Mouse + Keyboard and I feel like I'm arm-wrestling an octopus trying to keep an enemy ship in front of me. I usually just give up and kill it by shooting lasers out of my, uh, rear end. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2) I see the extra uniform slot, how do you qualify for that, or is it only for Fleet people?

3) Re: Memory Alpha is that mess even worth the trouble? 7000 for tier 1 seems doable but someone said in chat today that the next threshold was 100k. Urp.

If I think of any more, I'll add them...

I can really only answer 1), and the answer is no. Cruiser cannot turn (and if you're playing them right, probably shouldn't). Any turn boosting consoles is just as waste, as is allocating additional power to auxiliary systems. The rate increase really is noticeable.

A cruiser's strengths lie in its inherent beefy hull strength, repair rate, and dear god, the broadsides you can unleash

1) as said above, cruisers have a turn rate around 5, the recon type t5 science ship has a turn rate of 13. Escorts turn even better... It's just the way cruisers are.

2) fleets can have a fleet uniform, have to be designed by the fleet leader (as far as I know) and you change from one to the other by right-clicking yourself.

3) I think the second tier of Mem. Alpha is closer to 400K total value. Frankly it is not worth it, as the best things you can make if you even unlock the tier 3 crafters atm is blue rareity VIII and X's. Therefore a purple loot drop is still going to completely destroy anything you can make.

Hope that's helpful.

I'm no expert, but I'll try my best to answer what I can.

1) Part of the idea behind space combat is for it to feel like you're piloting a massive ship and not a small starfighter. That being said, cruisers are far and away the slowest at turning. Don't expect to be able to dictate where you are in relation to your enemies if you fly a cruiser. Now, if you want real responsiveness, fly a Bird of Prey.

2) I've been wondering that myself.

3) From what I understand, people know how to get from tier 1 to tier 2, but the jury is still out on tier 3. In the short term, it does seem to take forever. However, in the long term, it's not going to really amount to too much effort. At least, I think. As for whether it's worth it...well, I'd say that depends on the player. I don't think it's universally worth it. But for those who like to gather up the data samples and fiddle with it, then it's great. But if that isn't fun for you, just skip it. I think it's unlikely that there's anything at Memory Alpha that warrants griding through things you don't enjoy.

Anywho, that's my take on things.

1) Cruisers turn slow. This is the nature of the beast. There are some things that I can tell you that will help this.
a) Use a increased turn rate console. - it helps a little. (I can make mine "drift" in sector space.....lol)
b) Throttle down to make turns. Having it wide open all the time is futile.
and/or
c) Put beams and torps on the back and when the enemy is behind you, move in a semi straight line and turn left/ right to distribute damage over 3 of your shields.

or USE A DIFFERENT SHIP.

2) I think it fleet - not sure on this point.

3) Mem Alpha can take a white item and upgrade it for free - is it worth it? I think is up to the player. time vs. money......

The next tier is split up between eng/science and tactical. If you make solid engineering and science it takes around 350k on up depending on the level of the item. If you just build tactical stuff then its 100k.

The value of science and engineering items (deflectors and engines) are higher so the value needed to move on just doing those 2 classes is higher. Since the highest price items in tier 2 tactical is around 8k it takes less credit value to level tactical.

Fed cruisers turn like a drunken mule pulling 10 tons of cement. Tier 4 is the worse. Worse in the game. When grouped everyone else had to wait for me to turn before going on. Dont even get me started on vertical flying missions. Thats like a drunken mule pulling 10 tons of cement down a steep incline with hair pin turns. Glad I dont have to worry about that anymore. Tier 5 is much better. Turns just a little bit slower than tier 3 and that is understandable considering mass/inertia, etc.

1) Escorts turn great and science ships don't do badly either. Cruisers turn much more slowly, but can absorb a good deal more damage and repair quicker so its all a tradeoff. Using consoles to help the turn rate will help a little, but not a ton. Its also a good reason to load out your cruiser with fairly wide arc weapons instead of ones with a narrow arc facing forward or rear. Mines also aren't bad on a cruiser since while they may outturn you, they can get a nice spread of mines in their face by doing so.

3) Crafting here is like other MMOs really. You can make some decent items here although you will usually be able to 'eventually' find better gear though missions and high end drops. The upgraded lvl II personal shields for instance you'll likely find a better one for your captain, but probably not for each crewman so there is some utility in either crafting or cruising the AH for buying stuff from those who do craft. Don't let the 100K for the 2nd crafting level intimidate you too much. Gear goes up in price with level so its not all that many higher level items you have to craft to hit the next level, although it does take time like any crafting will.
