Now I have a little currency...what should I do with it.

I've gotten just over 60000 energy...some of that via pvp (seems a nice way to earn energy)

But all the stuff that I've looked at seems to be purchasable with exploration badges or pvp badges...

I'm loathe to pay the stupidly inflated prices on the exchange...Any advice? Have I missed a location somewhere that sells good stuff for energy?

Here are some ideas for EC expenditure...

1)Join a Fleet and deposit it into your Fleet Bank in case someone else has more need for it.

2)Buy the best gear when reaching a new Tier. Get in Mk II early...Mk IV at 11th Level...Mk VI at 21st Level, etc.

3)Buy very low priced items on the Exchange and resell them at higher prices. Re-selling is profitable but don't TELL anyone you do it because it makes them cranky because you are 'ruining cheap deals' for them.

4)Buy different types of weapons/shields/consoles just to try them out and see if you like them.

5)Give EC to new players and say "Welcome to Star Trek Online, live long and prosper.", as you open the trade window.

The misconception that all prices on the Exchange are inflated is drivin' me nuts (like a captain's wheel on a pirate's belt buckle). :|

Fun fact: With maybe 15 seconds of extra searching, I got a Plasma Compression Pistol (I was specifically looking for a pistol that had an Exploit attack, rather then Expose) for 200 credits. There was another for 500, and another for 700 up at the same time, and maybe a few for a couple thousand as well.

Figure out what you want, then use stacked searches to find something in a price range you agree with and ignore anything outside of those limits (I actually paid about 5% of what I was expecting for the above pistol). Sheesh.

That said, you could also donate to the 'Build YuriFox a Fort Out Of Gold-Pressed Latinum' fund.

Go sell it on the exchange for that silly price...

Seriously I get the 'things are worth what people are prepared to pay for them' nature of MMO economies, and if I might broadly use the (I think) P.T.Barnum quote 'There's one sucker born every minute'...

...even then, with the filter taking all those things out of the list that are too high a level, 90% of the items are blanked out as too expensive because of the stupid prices. I have to scroll, inconvenienctly, through loads and loads of stuff that I'm never in a million years even going to look at buying. Common Tribbles for 1000's of credits. Only a, now what is the politically correct term here...******, would pay those prices.

That having been said, those of us trying to use the exchange in a fair and equitable manner, how do you decide on a price? For now...I've been thinking along the lines....If it won't sell, I'll have to put it in the replicator and only make half credits on it. If it's much more than the price at the bottom of the card I doubt it will sell because people will just purchase it with exploration/pvp badges (or will be able to find something better at Spacedock or K7). Greens and Blues....well...back when I was playing WoW they seemed to go for something like 2 - 5 x the base price, exactly because they were rare, and they were drops, you didn't just get them given to you for completing a mission.

Any thoughts?

As far as my original post goes...giving it away somehow doesn't give me the buzz I know my Andorian Captain would get if he were in charge.

DarkOrion:
Some interesting [] ideas. I can appreciate the need to buy the best gear as soon as you reach that level bracket. Having played pickup pvp mostly for the past two days [mostly losing, but enjoying it] I can see the need for good equipment.

I'm not so much for trying out different combinations. I'm 40 and grumpy, stubborn, old man syndrome is kicking in. I have 'Feds don't use disruptors' tatooed inside my brain...I'm a purist for my sins...so its phasers and torps only for me. I definately need more useful gear for the ground pvp though. It gets used up really quickly.

Reselling...yah....used to do that on the WoW auction houses. I think you have to if you want to afford some of the nicer gear. Thing is...in WoW...I could pretty much guarentee an 80% sell rate. In STO...not so much...I've put 10 things up for sale and sold 3 or 4. Maybe in a month or two people will check the exhange more, but until all the gold farmers [as opposed to astute businessmen with a Ferengi bloodline] are pushed out I can't see it being much use.

Any other suggestions....how about a location where I can spend energy rather than badges?

You can also save the money to buy extra ships later on. Sure, you may be going for a Cruiser, Escort or Science vessel, but there are two different kinds of Tier V ships you can buy at the end. With enough money, you can get both. =)

You could also buy Bridge Officers on the Exchange if you want... to better fill out your crew with skills and abilities you wouldn't otherwise have access to.

Yeah..I thought about a second ship, and that is probably what I'll spend it on....is there a limit to the number of ships you can have waiting for you?

I'm kind of umming and erring regarding my bridge officers at the moment. I'm sitting on a whole lot of BOff points wondering what to do since only my Vulcan Science Officer can actually use her 2nd level Powers....but, if I bought a second ship...say an escort to go whizzing round in, I'd have to train up a second tactical officer and promote my current Andorian Tactical Officer...

Hmmm...thanks for the most useful post so far..

Deciding on price (buying AND selling) is something that takes me a little bit to figure out - when I'm buying an item, I tend to start with a simple search (like, if I'm buying Starship Phasers, I click that category and enter 'Phaser') and whittle my way down from there (from 'Phaser' to 'Phaser Beam', to 'Dual Phaser Beam' and the like) with my current Rank as the only major filter (unless I want something more specific, or I'm buying for an alt). Then I check the average price for a Common unit of that type, and decide how much it's worth to me to get that now instead of hunting around for it. Typically, I don't spend more then 5,000 energy on something common like Phasers, Disruptors, or Photon Torpedos (and only on Green versions of those - in response to the second question, visiting the various starbases generally have different weapon selections available for purchase. Both DS9 and Sierra Starbase 39 in the Sierra system, for example, have Lieutenant Commander - Commander grade items). If it's something I don't see a lot of in my normal progression (plasma beam arrays, for example) or highly specific (A plasma compression pistol vs. any other plasma ground weapon), I can go up to 10 or 15 thousand.

Selling... I think about those same things. What would be the most I would pay on this item, based on it's quality? What would be the minimum I would expect, and the most I would expect? I then aim for a range somewhere in the middle of that range and go do other stuff for a while - I'm patient, and can wait weeks for something to sell if I have to, if I think I priced it fairly.

I tend to avoid selling anything less then Blue gear, though, or special things like EPS Flow Consoles, and stick to instead putting up 'Crafting' data that I personally have no desire or inclination to use myself (and infact, I'll probably throw up another set once I hit Commander). Anything that can be commonly acquired (green items through Memory Alpha or badges, common items through energy credits or badges), I tend to just Replicate to save myself time later.
