# 1 ATI card and 10.1 drivers?
02-08-2010, 03:32 PM
Before I upgrade to the new Catalyst 10.1 drivers (heard there are some issues with em), has anyone tried using em in STO? Did it improve or fix the dynamic lighting/post processing crashes?

My current system is:

Nforce 630i motherboard
Intel core 2 duo E8400 (not overclocked)
Sapphire HD 4830
Corsair 750 Watt TX PSU
2 GB DDR2 RAM
Windows XP SP 3

It's a decent system that can run most stuff on high-ultra high settings. However with STO as most know ATI cards get no love. Not only is performance reduced compared to Nvidia chips, but there are serious issues with dynamic lighting enabled that can cause crashes and even BSOD's. If this has been fixed, well, it would be good to know.

If not, can we please at least get confirmation that this extremely serious issue is being looked at?

Thanks.

I've been using 10.1 with my XFX HD4890. I think stock spec, it's rated at 850/975. But I have it OC to 900/1000. It was 900/1050. But I kept having crashing issues with Vegas 2. I lowered it down and it stopped crashing. Anyways, with STO, I was having major crashing issues. I was running it at 1920x1080 8xAA, 16x, Dynamic Lighting on, Max lights per object 2, most other settings to High, and Vert Sync on. But I kept having random crashes. Sometimes gray screen. Sometimes total lock up. However, once I turned off Dynamic Lighting, No More Crashing! I tested it out Saturday. It rained hard all day long. So I stayed home. I ended up playing the game for almost 24hours straight. No crashes. I think temp hovered around 75ish (according to CCC). So to answer your question, no 10.1 does not solve the Dynamic Lighting issue. At least not for me. If my HD5970 ever comes in, I'll let ya know how that does.

Other system specs

AMD Phenom II X4 945 (95w)
750w psu
8gb DDR3
Win7
XFX HD4890 (not black edition)
blah blah blah hehe

I just started a thread that recommends that you update directx. If you have tried everything else, you might try this, just run a search for: directx redist feb 2010 (I downloded from softpedia, bout 110mb). This fixed all my problems with an ati card on windows 7 (I think its a windows 7 issue and not a card/driver issue). If you have tried everything else, might as well give it a shot. Note: the exe extracts the files to a folder of your choosing, just run dxsetup as an administrator after that then reboot.

Well that's a shame as I figured it driver related.

Hope they fix this... it's becoming rather annoying to have to disable this option all the damn time.

I am having shadow issues with my card. The shadows seem to flicker in space only. Faster the ship moves the faster the shadows flicker.

Does the new drivers fix that by any chance?

It didnt fix dynamic lighting for me but I've never had an issue with Post Processing. - have not tried previous drivers with STO to check.

For me the new drivers fixed the frequent BSOD crashes I was getting with my HD4870 while in ground combat. Made me a happy camper. Thing still acts like STO is Crysis II or something in terms of load and head, but no more crashes. Definitely recommend the driver if your seeing BSOD crashes with the 4700/4800 series.

Thanks for the info, but do you have dynamic lighting enabled?
