The thing about classes is your a captain and you have officers under you which allows for skills to be more then that of just one man. You could go for a heavily based repair set up that makes you a good healer/tank or really good scanners to see cloaked ships, or perhaps based around buffs and debuffs.
No one is stopping you from making a class that is part of a well defined role at all, but why take away a players ability to be a jack of all trades?
I also have to disagree with the ships a bit, this is something that would cause problems for PvP players who need to look at the ship to see oh thats a cruiser or escort, here is what it can do. Now I need to find a counter, similar to the reasons the Powerhue thing needed to be removed. The options of different stats are there, if you want a fast ship go escort, tank go cruiser, subsystem targeting and other stuff go science. The best part is you can own all three if you wanted to.
Although I do agree leveling is a bit to fast, and should probably take a bit longer. And exploration could be a little better although if you play Mass Effect they have many planets in nebulas.
Have everyone able to do everything makes the classes pointless, more just having your character in a different colour suit. Each class should be limited to their class ship and each ship type needs to be unique, crusiers having access to better shields, science vesslels better deflecters that kind of thing but atm everyone can have the same. Even the end game Epics or "very rare" have the same dps as normal ones, and if anything worse bonuses theres nothing to seperate them from the norm other than colour.
They need to have set Tank/Healer/dps roles and have the moves and equipment unique to each class for them to fill that role.
Thank you all for your thoughts, a good debate on this topic can only me a good thing. ODST i understand and respect your opinion, but like shadow says, there just isnt enough difference between the classes. when everyone can do everything there is no feeling of uniqueness at all.
Also your point about mass effect 2 having planets in nebula's is fine, but in STO the only thing to explore are nebula's. it doesn't feel like im exploring space at all.
As i said im not "bashing" the game,i do like it and continue to play, these are just ways i feel it could be improved.
another solution could be to limit each class to their specific type of ship. Then you'd be choosing a role of ship when you make your character. How ever this leads me onto the next issue:
wouldn't it have been better to make it a 3 way choice and have different stats for each ship?? one could have better hull for tank, one better weapons and other better speed. Thats only a very basic concept and you could expand that a lot more. You slightly get this with the choice in rear admiral ships- assault cruiser/ star cruiser for example so why not do it across the board?
its logical contradiction
you want limit ships choice and then you want more limited ship option?
right now you have lots of option and flexibility
you can choose role according to your mood / group need
the real difference comes from load and your ship crew
plz just stop with boring wow kind tank healer damage dealer
Yeah with the character leveling system, i know you can train in and out powers for your bridge officers, so why can't we as captains have like a skill tree as we level? I don't want every single tact captain to get evasive menuvours(sp?) for example. This should have some variance.
Personally i agree with alot of what you have to say. I found it amazing how quickly i got from ensign to Lt Commander and now flying around in my excalibur cruiser. Mind you i haven't played in a few days.
