starships do not travel at that speed. the warp field around the ship does. Essentially the ship is not moving. Essentiall meaning that the ship is in a buble...that moves through space time at faster then light. The crew is fine. And the ship itself is protected within the buble by inertial dampeners, to keep it smooth...
Oh lol that proved Star Trek wrong +1 to them.. oh wait its a fictional series, What an idiot
More like that proved the guy making the "argument" has no knowlege of Star Trek whatsoever, and that those considerations had already been accounted for with fictional technologies seperate from the Warp Drive. (Deflector Dish anyone?)
Without even having to discuss the faster than light speed via a warp story line. For sub-light, which on impulse does go almost the speed of light, one only needs to point to the big radar like antenna on the orginal Enterprise. That's the deflector dish. You know to deflect things like those pesky hyrdogen atoms out of the way of the ship to avoid just such an issue. Geeze, that's 1960's Trek lore, that has always been included on the Enterprise regardless of letter.
The author of the article was more interested in making a point about high speed in space more than commenting on Trek. On Trek he displayed more ignorance than knowledge.
Just the fact that we're discussing this makes the guy's point valid. Not the stuff about hydrogen. The part where he attracts attention by using a scifi franchise to illustrate how his research should ruin it.
Had he just said "Hey guys hydrogen in space hurts" the piece would never have found its way to the general public.
He's probably right though
