# 1 Question about ranks
02-24-2010, 05:41 PM
Just wondering why Cryptic at this time decided that the top rank should be Rear Admiral? While we all know that Cryptic will be raising the levels why not at this time had the top rank be Commodore this would have left Rear Admiral, Vice - Admiral, Admiral, and Fleet Admiral ranks to be obtained. Your thoughts would be welcomed.

dunno, but the official TNG era ranking was this:

Ensign
Lieutenant Junior Grade
Lieutenant
Lieutenant Commander
Commander
Captain
Rear Admiral
Vice Admiral
Admiral
Fleet Admiral

Commodore was only in TOS, they replaced with Rear Admiral in TNG.

Quite simply, Rear Admiral is the highest rank that can be held by an ACTIVE ships captain, and then that is normally only when said ship is the command ship of a fleet.

As far as I remember there are 15 Fleets, therefor there will only be 15 ACTIVE RA captains at any one time.

In addition in peace times the highest rank that holds the "center chair" is Commodore as the flag rank officers are disributed around the federation in administrative and diplomatic capacities, although many keep "flag" ships (normally of escort class or lower) to act as personal transports.

Aaaannd, again. Commodore was PHASED OUT in TNG era, replaced by Rear Admiral.

JP Hansen, the admiral who was commanding the force against the borg was a full admiral, not rear or vice (3 pips in gold bracket).

Admiral ross was a Vice admiral (2 pips) and had the Bellerophon.

The only reason commodore doesn't exist in TNG is because when TNG first aired in '88, the US navy which the Trek rank scheme was based on remove commodore from their ranks, Gene Roddenberry being the ex-navy man he is, chose to remove commodore as well.

Im working off a 1982 Star Trek RPG book m8, way before TNG, and may I point out that Commodore/Fleet Captain are interchangable titles

Well i hate to break it to ya, but the game is set in TNG, and based on content from the 1990s, so it's a bit more up to date then your RPG

And regardless of the interchangability, Fleet Captain doesnt exist in TNG either.
