# 1 Klingon ship of choice
02-25-2010, 03:27 AM
Hello,

Been lurking around here for awhile and got to level 5 as a Klingon too the other night. I've been a happy cruiser pilot until I got to level 5 where I also bought a BoP to 'play around with'. The battle cruiser is a good choice and can soak up a huge amount of damage, but I find the playability of the BoP even more fun.

My question to you, fellow Fed-hammers, what do you prefer and why please? Just trying to get a feel what most of you prefer and will make a desicion upon that.

Maybe I should just try out the carrier too...

Regards,

I enjoy the T5 cruiser and BoP. I have hated every raptor I've tried. I just bought a carrier to explore that today so no opinion.

Cruiser : I set mine up like a beam boat. +25 plasma, +25 plasma in tactical, 6 plasma beams, torp front and back. 2 EPS and 2 resist all in engineering, I don't know enough about science consoles so they are just +crew consoles. I like this setup because I'm not in a hurry. It is relaxing play. I hang around the carriers and put 6 beams on anything that comes close. You can dip the tail or nose in to keep your torpedos cycling. 2 RSP in the bag give extra stay power, attack alpha and beta and the beam penetrator ability add hitpower. The only trouble is if someone has a stacked FBP setup, you need to stop shooting as soon as you determine it's active. This ship play is for when your tired, hung over, disracted or watching TV and listening to radio at the same time. Very fun.Relaxing.

BoP : Hitpower and mad , mad steering is what this ship is about. 3 cannons in front+torp, turrets and sometimes a torp around the back. Rapid Fire + attack alpha, beta and omega on a strafing run. You need to focus on your game to play this ship, and know where everyone is around you. I play this ship two way : dive in strafing runs with power out and a turn around, or slow down and just continuously unload on one guys back side or back shield. Match speed and hope you can finish him before his group focus fires you. When the feds hear your rapid fire cannons go off the first time, a good team will focus fire on you fast. RSP is a must to escape those (for me anyways, your solutions may differ).

raptor : A poor ship that seems a compromise between BoP and Cruiser, doing nothing well. It turns like a pig and has substandard armor. I did nothing well. I eventually gave up trying to coax all that wonderful "firepower' it brags about and made it a beam boat until 21 and never tried another. Perhaps a T5 Raptor driver can chime in how it did later.

Edit to correct an acronym

I honestly like the Bird of Prey the most.

Versatility coupled with the ability to 'change it up' on the fly is awe inspiring....

Oh wait I need more controls... Ok I got that.. oh wait I need more tank and heal others ok I got that ..oh wait I need more damage... got it!

All after a brief pause and jumping back into the action with assignment changes...

Using my heal build with tankage I have tanked as well as anyone else I have seen in ships of all sorts...

Using the more dps builds I can top charts for damage...its just versatility is > more hull and shields for me...

And now that I am earning the cool rare equipment types on the dailies... mmm Yummy...

My ship of choice until Tier 3 was the Bird of Prey (Tier 1 of course gave no choice).

BoP - Fast, very maneuverable, can hit hard. The "fun" ship if you will. Flexible with universal slots for BOffs, but you get 1 BOff skill less overall compared to the regular ships (a hefty cost, IMO).

Raptor - I try to make the Raptor work but the BoP and Battlecruisers make this ship completely obsolete. With no battlecloak, this ship tries to act like a Cruiser but can't since it is not durable. It CAN dish out alot of hurt, but will not last long once cloak is dropped. Just like how KDF players like to light up low levels or Escorts, same thing with the Feds. KDF cruisers can be tough, and BoP's like to come in / out of battle with the Battlecloak, so Raptors are automatic points for them. Just start shooting at one.

Battlecruisers - K'T'Inga, Vor'Cha, and Negvhar. Not as durable as Federation equivalents, but more maneuverable and can possess cannons. They truly bring durability to the otherwise flimsy KDF ships, where at Tier 2 it becomes very apparent (due to no Cruisers for KDF at that Tier). A healthy number of KDF players choose Battlecruisers. They let players like me stay in the fight longer, and if I do my job well, they focus on me and not on the BoPs and poor Raptors. These ships are where I put most of my time in.

It depends a lot on your play style. I tried BOP but it proved too fragile. I tend to fly into group of enemies and sit there soaking damage. I had hard time surviving with BOP. It is nice to have BC and its agility but it didn't fit my play style. With cruiser I can fly in, take hits for 3-4 ships for some time and let others take them out while they are busy trying to blow me. I also get a rather sadistic pleasure from ramming speed, and with a cruiser it is very enjoyable to slice an enemy escort in two.

I have to go with the beamboat ie cruiser... I keep my carrier and neghvar as full beam boats actually 4 to 5 eps consoles, and I just broadside. BOP takes too much effort to play IMO and hats off to you guyz who are good at it it takes a level of concentration that I find exhausting lol. What I do is setup all arrays with only one fore torpedo, with 3 rsp, 2 or 3 sci teams, 1 or 2 eng team and fbp <if i have space>

I pretty much am the main tank in every team group or even pug pvp, I dont die very easily and one on one or two vs two I fare pretty well.. so far this setup has worked fine for me and I am never below 4th in dps on any map, but I dont pvp with bops so once again.. hats off to you guys for stayin alive long enough to do as much dmg as me or more kudos...

Thank you all for your replies. I really appreciate it.

I currently have my battle cruiser set up with 6 beams and two dual cannons up front for some zomgwtfisthatwhichtjustdecloakedandfiresonme. Pretty funny to see a Fed Galaxy-class cruiser melt away like butter in a microwave.

However, I find myself getting a better evil grin on my face when I do the same in my BoP. I use 2 dual heavy cannons and two dual cannons up front and turrets to match at the back to get the most out of an alphastrike. What are your opinions on this, please?

Well although alot of nubs <lol y aI know everyones a nub at this game right now it just came out lol its ust funny to say heheh> anyways alot of nubs would disagree IMO I prefer and think arrays are better in your 2 aft weapon slots for bop, just use 2 eps pwr xsfer consoles... yeah yeah youll say what about my def. buff for my eng consoles?? I need those!!! Lol well try this as a replacement,,,

3 sci teams 1 eng team and 2 rsp, = PWN <you dont have to have the eng. team but that lil bit sometimes helps>
youll be happeh trust me those arrays do a helluva lot more dmg than turrets even though theyre not 360 you only need em for rear and sides since you swing back so fast to lock fore on again on target anyways you WILL actually see a slight increase in dps right off the bat, even more so as you learn to milk it better.

You seem to have decided torpedos are not worth it. They are. At T5 when I have a high yield torp crit for 14,000 on an unshielded victim it is a time saver.

On my BoP I usually run one torp in the back, as a strafing run parting shot. It is especially useful with a chroniton torpedo (-100% flight speed and turn rate for 10 seconds).

I DO run all cannons up front though, like you say. You WILL draw fire from good teams though, so have a plan to deal with FF frenzy other than boom,,,,respawn, kill 1, boom.repeat.
