Several times now i have been killed by hull damage alone while my shields are up. whenever this happens i can actually see the weapons go rite through my shields doing no damage to them but destroying my hull.
When i check my combat log to see what was going on, these weapons were antiproton weapons. Now i purchased 1 antiproton beam array myself to do some testing. this did not go rite though shields.
So following are the possible explinations i have come up with so far.
1. Antiproton cannon weapons go through shields but not beam weapons?
2. A full set of antiproton weapons stacks the chance to penetrate shields and putting all skill points in the increases this chance?
3. anti proton weapons combined with some form of ability go through shields?
4. There is a bug with some of the antiproton weapons??
Notice the question marks guys!!! This is simply a list of POSSIBLE explinations IN MY OWN OPINION.
Finally a question. is the default colour for antiproton cannon bolts Blue?? because every time this has happened to me the weapons have been blue yet all antiproton beams are similar in colour to phasers just darker.
From the way I understand it ... all of this is still rather new ... all shields have a "bleed through" effect so most, if not all, weapons can do hull damage. The shields just lower that against your hull. If for instance, your shields have a 10% bleed through, then your hull would only get 10% of the damage done if no shields were there. This is what I understand at this point. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
It could be that in some cases, different weapons are able to do more hull damage because THEY have a greater "bleed through" effect. The higher tier beams/torps have effects that do more than just damage and it could be that the Antiproton weapon doesn’t ignore shields but has a higher “bleed through” effect, which may cause more damage depending on what type of shields you have. In fact, if you look at your shields, they have a bleed through effect listed as well as regen and strength.
The resulting damage you take may be a combo of your shields bleed through, strength and regen and may be greatly altered by what weapon it tries to defend against. In your case, Antiproton
The available antiproton weapons also stack lots of extra crit in both severity and chance. This ~should~ make them produce higher damage overall compared to the other beam weapons currently available. Although if what Mike111 said is accurate then at this point it doesn't even matter.
I would guess that antiproton is a good route to go for escorts but science vessels and cruisers might be more interested in getting the effects from other types of beam weapons.
Coincidently, while it is easier to get higher beam damage from the other weapon types (partly because the +30 whatever beam console is easily obtainable), I have had two +30 antiproton consoles drop...both of which I passed to another player in my fleet.
