That's the name I chose for my Sovereign-class ship.

If I'm stuck for a name for one of my ships I use this cool English to Latin translator hosted by the University of Notre Dame http://www.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/lookdown.pl

Some latin names really are unique and some of them have a nice ring to them.

Been working through Norse Mythology for names recently. I do like the list of traditional Capital Ship names for T4 and T5 though. Of course Capulet beat me to the punch with her one liner.

I'm on my second shipped named Mississippi, but i'm getting sick of explaining that it's the river and not the state.

Here's a good page for picking a good name for your ship too.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/names.htm

It's a page about naming conventions for ships. Since the Enterprise name has been used mostly by the US Navy, I figure the naming conventions of the US Navy would be appropriate. Cruisers would be cruisers, escorts would be destroyers (replace 'Distinguished USN/USMC officers & enlisted men' with 'Distinguished Earth soldiers') and science ships would be hospital ships or named after someone or something science like.

If they let us rename runabouts use that for it, since all the ones in DS9 were named after Earth rivers.

For my ship names I've been using Hinduism.

Originally I planned on naming my ships after American Astronauts,i.e. the U.S.S. Buzz Aldrin,U.S.S. Neil Armstrong ect,but figured a lot of others would use those names.Much to my chagrin I've yet to see a single ship named after these men.Anyway I went a slightly different route and turned to the communist space programs for ship names.
U.S.S. Gagarin-Yuri Gagarin was a Russian Cosmonaut, first man in space
U.S.S. Tereshkova-Valentina Tereshkova was a Russian Cosmonaut, first woman in space
U.S.S. Liwei-Yang Liwei is a Chinese Taikonaut, the first man sent to space by the Chinese space program
