Issue:

It's been a a little while now since the launch of the game and we've all had a chance to really get in and experience everything the game has to offer both good and bad.

My thread hopes to deal with what i feel is a fairly large but deceptively simple flaw in the control interface of the game. Hopefully enough people share this perspective to have it corrected in a future patch.

During your time playing STO. Have you ever been in a Fleet action or Deep Space encounter and while under attack from an enemy activated an ability such as Engineering or Science Team at a crucial moment?

Has the ability ever automatically targeted one of your allies and applied the buff to them, often wasting it and resulting in your fiery death?

If you answered YES to both of these questions then you are another victim of the 'Assist Target on Attack' control setting (located in the 'controls' section of the option menu).

Simply put, If you're targeting an Ally and you fire phasers, your ship will target their target and then fire phasers. If you have an enemy target however and you use a beneficial ability (Engineering Team) Then your ship will automatically target the enemy's target before applying the ability.

Why don't we just turn off the AToA option?

While i dislike how i often die as a result of my ship automatically applying an ability to the target of my target i quite like the way i can assist my party members simply by clicking them then spamming buttons.

Solution:

In essence i think that it's a mistake to have both of these actions handled by the same setting. I propose that in an upcoming patch that this single control setting be split into two separate options as follows -

Assist Ally on Attack - If enabled, attempting to attack a friend will instead change your target to their target and then activate the power.

Assist Ally on Heal - If enabled, attempting to heal an enemy will instead change your target to their target and then activate the power.

In their own words of course.

I have this problem all the time as an engineer.
If your targeted on enemy and use a buff it will give it to other players.
I've lost countless EPS buffs during a cannon rapid fire, which can destroy my power grid and my DPS.
On ground I've lost equipment diagnostics buff while tanking which has got me killed too.

The best way I can figure to solve the problem is target myself first and then use it but getting back on target in a large mob is difficult.
I hope cryptic addresses this issue soon, it's one of the bigger frustrations of the interface

I have noticed that and it's extremely fustrating but also, if I have last targetted an ally and healed them then went back to attacking and sometimes I heal them (remembers last healed ally) or myself. Sometimes I target an ally to actually heal them but I'm not sure if they are targeted and ended healing myself. And often this has resulted in either theirs or my death.

As I agree with that, I wish it's a lot more clearer who will get healed, the ally or myself before I hit that button. (In a team, have self in the team party list and highlight target of a heal separately to an attack target. This would make it so much easier for Doctors, and Sci/Eng class users, support types basically.

Wow, I think this is my first ever post on the forum.. or second. o_o;

But this is an issue that really bothers me a lot because I am a support type player, I like playing the priests in other MMO, and so on.

So thats why I sometimes randomly heal my BOs!

I totally agree with this change Osias. It must be made NAO.

Make it so.

Excellent suggestion. After I initially figured out what was going on and found that setting in the options, I tried it both ways. Neither on or off made me happy for exactly the reasons you described. I would like to target my allies target if I press attack, but I do not want to heal my enemies target. Separating this behavior into two options would allow me to play in a way that feels natural to me.
