In recent weeks i have met feds with some really kickass weapons in PVP space. Im commanding a Carrier and i can last in hmmm say 6 seconds, il see my ships shields just vanish and the hull drops so fast and BOOM, Game Over. Dont even got to fire my weapons, im trying with feedback and all but nothing works. Is it some kind of rapid fire and sub shields thing ? i dont mind getting owned, i knowe there are some good captains out there but this ship killer thing is so frustrated.
It's Rapid Fire combined with dual cannons and probably several other offensive buffs. You cannot absorb this damage without popping defensive cooldowns of your own. Now, if your shields are actually dropping (i.e. not collapsing due to incoming damage, but just disappearing) then you're getting hit with something (probably Target Subsystem:Shields) that can take out your shields temporarily. If this happens, you need to pop every hull resist buff you have immediately. See below.
As a Carrier, you have lots of options:
1. Reverse Shield Polarity is the classic counter, and against an Escort with all his buffs popped RSP is the ONLY thing that will keep your shields up. The damage is only unmanageable for 15 seconds or so, the duration of most offensive buffs. It's convenient that RSP has the same duration.
2. Stacking independent resist buffs. For you, this would be a combination of any of the following:
- Hazard Emitters (hull heal, major resist buff)
- Polarize the Hull (major resist buff, Tractor immunity)
- Brace for Impact (major kinetic resist buff, critical if your shields fall)
- Science Team
- Emergency Power to Shields
- [Engineer specific] Rotate Shield Frequency
Popping all of these at once will make you nearly impervious to incoming damage for the duration. You're not invincible, but you're pretty close. It's critical to remember that Escorts aren't doing this silly damage all the time; they need to pop offensive BOff powers to do it, and you need to pop defensive powers to counter it. Realistically, only RSP is strong enough to protect you from an Escort right now, but your other abilities can and will buy you time.
You can also counter it offensively with things like Jan Targeting Sensors and Viral Matrix, but those require lightning reflexes if you intend them as defensive measures against an Escort attacking you.
I have noticed this is more pronounced now - even in the PvE area. I have watched my shields - all quadrants - just drop immediately. I think it is 'target subsystem shields" and it was tweaked to " work better " by the devs.
Either that - or since I started using it, I started noticing it on myself !
Anyway - Especially if you are being targeted by multiple ships, and your shields drop like that, hull is going to pop really really quick. This would become rather startling in PvPs !!
Target Subsystem: Shields actually does two things. It has a chance (40% at rank 3, I believe) to temporarily disable a specific shield facing, AND it reduces your shield power setting by a variable amount influenced by several different skills and consoles. If your shields are completely disappearing on all facings, what actually happened is that your shield power was reduced to zero or below. You can (partly) counter this with skills like Emergency Power to Shields and EPS Power Transfer, or by manually transferring power from other systems.
If it's just one facing that goes down, it was TSS and the facing only stays down for a few seconds. Blow defensive cooldowns, EM to turn the destroyed facing away, etc. Sometimes the attacker will have already dropped a High Yield Salvo, in which case you're going to take a lot of hull damage and there's not much you can do about it.
Two defensive powers that are good for when your shields go down: Engineering Team (which repairs disabled systems) and Brace for Impact (which might save you from the torpedo volley that is sure to follow.
