Thanks SO MUCH for all your support, and we'll see you in-game!
Since achieving Rear Admiral 5 (60,700 skillpoints) I've only been receiving BO skillpoints and other mission rewards, but no skillpoints for my toon. I submitted a ticket in game and was told there was no problem.
Does this mean there is no grade 6 or higher for Admirals?
I read in the "Ask Cryptic" section that there was no skillpoint cap. That it was possible to eventually max out training on all of your skills.
There is a skill point cap, and there has always been a skill point cap. Otherwise it would break the game. RA 5 right now is the max level. They have plans to raise it all the way to 10 some time this year.
there's a cap. highest people get is 60.7k skillpoints, and that may be increased (one of the previous state of game adresses mentioned raising the cap to RA10 later this year).

There wasn't always a cap, actually. The original plan called for it to be uncapped. Was changed late in beta.
Wouldn't really break the game to not have one, but would make everyone the same, as well as remove pretty much any reason to have more than 1 captain of each background per faction.

It was the September 17 post:
"Mach789: By the time I reach Admiral, will my skills be locked or will I be able to max out every skill eventually?
You can max out every skill eventually. We plan to keep adding skills to keep ahead of people, and by the time you’ve progressed through the endgame content, you’ll only have about half of the total skills you can acquire anyway."
The whole point of RPG's is character development. I completely agree with having a maximum rank, but I don't agree with a skillpoint cap. Skills should not be structured such that they make a player invincible. At best they should give you at most a 10%-20% advantage over having not trained that particular skill.
Having concentrated on Escort ship skills, thus far, I was looking forward to trying out Cruisers or Science vessels, but what is the point if I can't train the skills to be effective in them.
The 2 games I loved most in the past were similar to STO, both were cancelled because they could not keep older players interested.
I really feel sorry for the Career Officers who purchased lifetime subscriptions. Because it only becomes a bargain if the game lasts more than 2 years. Good luck with that.
They posted that there is no cap on September 17 and now there is a cap. Gee, how could that have happened in SIX MONTHS, especially in an MMO (that was still in development at the time) where things NEVER get changed?
...
Yes, there IS a skill cap. It was implemented just before "open" beta started in mid-february. No, it's not a bug.
Case closed. Have a nice day.
EDIT: The point? Create a new character then or use the respec feature.
Remember it was advertised to us as not having a skillcap. When we were told about the change it was about a week before launch, and then that announcement was actually an accidental leak. Don't be so unfriendly about it, a lot of people are still not happy about this situation too.

*cough* As far as I remember, the implementation of a skill cap was set in motion during the start of the open beta, which was about 2 weeks prior to launch.
And even if they would have decided just a day before launch to add a skill cap it wouldn't really have mattered. MMOs are subject to change constantly, and it doesn't take a genius to understand as to why Cryptic probably decided to set a skill cap after all.
And as for "advertised features", try reminding Blizzard Entertainment these days about the advertised dance studios, additional hero classes or housing for WoW. Let me know how it works out for ya.
Bottom line: unfortunately, it has become common practice for game companies to announce certain features for a game, only to scrap some of them during development. And for the record, STO was still "in development and prior to release" when the skill cap was implemented.
There's not much a player can do about all this apart from either staying and being constructive or leaving.
okay, good points. I was not trying to argue one way or the other though. I was just trying to recount what I remembered, and how a lot of people felt. If someone didn't know about that stuff they might be confused. I just though it sounded like people were being a bit too critical of the OP, and just wanted to remind everyone what I remembered about when and how they announced it. No hard feelings Okay.
