I like the concept behind this mission but the way it is designed within the game it is far too prohibitive to actually do, for a number of reasons. One, a mission like this requires you to either farm like mad, go to station to buy the parts at hyper-inflated costs, or use up inventory which frankly could be far more useful elsewhere. I recognize there might be an rp perspective behind this, but the regularity with which this scanner mission hits just doesn't make sense.
I suggest that the inventory required to aid aforementioned planet should be made a lot cheaper, and that perhaps the gameplay could be a little more interesting? Just running up to a planet and handing off highly expensive items for no exp or even a type of renown in return seems a bit much. I realize the idea behind starfleet helping these people is to be noble and helpful and all those wonderful things, but it is a game, and those aren't real people. It would be nice if either the rewards were commensurate with the effort, or the acquisition of parts for the Aid the planet were not so prohibitive.
Secondly, I'd like to see a diplomatic mission that's a little more intriguing than this. There's a couple I can think of through the regular storyline, but this one needs fleshing out. Of course I know our devs have this in mind, but I thought I'd touch on the point of what's wrong with Aid the Planet and why people flee like mad away from it.
Does anyone else feel the same way? I've run into so many groups of people who told me about this, and I've thought it myself. Especially after running into three needy planets in a row all desiring industrial this or stem bolt that. I've wondered a long time why I haven't seen anyone post on this in here, because I dont' think anyone does these missions. Go ahead and datamine this one Cryptic. I think you'll find we mostly flee it. The concept isn't bad, It just needs a reworking.
In fact i know of no one doing Aid the planet... To be blunt: It is a waste of my time even allocating theese missions to me, because i and i would geuss somthing close to 98% of the players run away from theese missions faster than they would from 6 borgcubes.
You do realize that klingons aren't exactly the bad guys right? At least if one reads what the loresingers tell, and through some of the Fed storyline.
At any regard I'm glad to hear they're reworking this. I tried doing a search on the forums about this, and saw about 100 unrelated topics based on my search 'aid the planet' so I figured it deserved its own thread.
I agree. These crap mission are stupid and pop up far to often.When I do my explore missions it's not uncommon for 3 plus to pop up in a row. Hell one day I had 6 then had 4 of those useless scan 5 anomilies. I don't do those because I feel you should have to atleast earn some of the Skill Points this game throws at us.
My problem with Aid The Planet missions was that you shouldn't be getting these before Lt Commander at the earliest simply because early on in your first few levels you haven't got the resources (Energy Credits) to afford to pay for these things. And while you can go to Starbase One or hail a passing merchant ship in Sirius or Regulus sectors in order to buy the necessary "parts" that go to these things ... they're always asking for a HUGE amount (10) which I have never had drop in all my way up to RA3.
If the Aid the Planet missions asked for ONE of the commodity items, instead of TEN at a time, they'd be a lot more reasonable. The thing is, I haven't seen any of these missions since passing beyond Lt Commander 10.
Now you do. I do them. Every time I get them. I don't do them right away. I save them. But I do finish them each and every time.
They work out pretty good for daily missions if you save them, since a lot of times after doing a B'Tran 3-spot, I'll go back to some other place where I will have the opportunity to get the supplies. Then I come back the next day and can knock it out with two clicks of the button.
They've already stated that these will be re-done. It would be nice to disable them in the meantime, but it's not a big deal.
I still want 'Loot the Planet' on the Klingon side, however...
Some mission ideas:
"Raid The Planet" - A quick ground attack to kill as many people and destroy / take as many materiel as possible, before heavy enemy response arrives.
"Convoy Raiding" - Infiltrate your cloaked ship past an active, determined set of convoy escorts, destroy as many cargo / supply ships as possible, get out before escorts destroy you. Bigger rewards for more of the convoy that is destroyed.
"Planetary Assault & Bombardment" - Lead a group of ships past a heavy defense, bombard the planet's populace into oblivion.
Regardless of any combat action, be sure to adhere to the old Klingon rule: Take no prisoners
