I kinda interpreted it as "you should not need them to play" not "you shouldn't be forced to use them". the connotation was a bit ambiguous though. I tend to give roach the benefit of the doubt though.

You are kinda "forced" to use EPS consoles to be able to dish out decent dps, as much as you are "forced" to use RSP to survive. Or just simply roll over and die in the process.

My apoligies. My posts do tend to be ambiguous
I wasn't complaining so much as trying to state that even when I spam the spacebar (keybound to fire all weapons), I see no huge decreases in my weapon power. I don't have any EPS equips what so ever and don't wish to see cannon power consumption raised to the point that I have to have them to operate an Escort properly
I tend to run
2DHplascannons, Dual plasma beam, Quantam torp ( all green to blue) and stack APA,FAW,EPtW, HYT2, CRF2 for my opening salvo. This coupled with my +19 cannon (x2),+22 plasma and +22 quatam boost, I tend to do decent dammage with little drain.
If the DPS capability of Escorts is nerfed due to power consumption issues, with thier already tissue paper defenses they will be no more fun to play than flying a big moving skeet.

I would actually tend to disagree here. If all players are running EPS then they become a requirment. None of us have any choice but ot run pretty much all EPS in the Eng slots. Pherhaps Cryptic needs to add a specific EPS or power slots for each ship that are additional to the Eng slots. This would probably also add to prelonging death and stop the -4 sec kills. I am currently running a Tac Cru and with beams it is an even higer requirment to run EPS than an escourt.

You do have a choice. If you don't want to use an EPS console, then you need to change your weapon setup. But if you want maximum forward firepower, then you have to pay for it.

Escorts don't need EPS consoles at all with an appropriate weapon loadout, but too many people think the only way to play one is 3x DHCs, torp, and 3x turrets which is almost the worst EPS situation you can possibly have.

three keys to sustained dps with dual heavy cannons.
1. no more than three cannons should be mounted.
2 min 2 eps consoles
3. riple fire the cannons (no simultaniouse fire) fire one cannon each second. this maximized your sustained dps.
this means you will have no more than two cannons firing simulatiously at any one time, and your energy usage will equal your regen.

I think the big issue is the nerf to EPS consoles. My thought is Cryptic nerfed it because they didn't want people stacking EPS so they never see a power drain on their ship. I don't know what people used before the nerf in terms of the number of EPS consoles on their ship but now the thought seems to be every engineering console needs to be an EPS console. that means the rest end up never being used.

My suggestion is make the EPS consoles a unique-equip item and remove the nerf made to the console. I think that would have been a better shot at fixing it instead of nerfing them and pretty much forcing everyone to stack more consoles. just my thought

Agreed.

They nerfed the EPS to stop people from using them to keep their power levels high, but that change did absolutely no good. Now we have to run ALL EPS consoles, with no room for anything else.

I can imagine you sitting there, mashing your face on the space bar like mad.... come on, power drain is cryptics way of telling you "we don't want you to do that, since that would be too cheesy."
Which it incidentally is.

Either you keep mashing your face to the space bar, then you require some eps consoles (which you do anyway, cryptic was a bit over enthusiastic with the EPS nerf, resulting in excessive usage - because they are still point for point better than anything else) OR you limit your face mashing to controlled amounts and look up once in a while.

And yeah, drop the turrets, they add little and drain a lot. And maybe grab a dual beam array front and use it for beam overload. besides, make friends with rear facing torps? or, if you're at a complete loss, just toss in some mines on auto fire?

And btw:

It's about pvp, which is way more difficult than pve target practice. what works there will also work against borg cubes.

Ah, i forgot: EmPW is your friend, too.
