I think you are missing the point on the runabout. Its a RP ship and a really cool one at that. Who cares about the price it adds flavor to the game.
Edit to add I don't think the runabout should count towards your ship total since it really isn't that viable a combat ship. It should be added in a different category like shuttles. Then they could add other RP ships of that size and be a compliment to your existing ship.
I agree with this. I would love to buy more shuttles. The runnabout is just fun.
It would be *really* neat to have runabouts/shuttles accessible while another ship is your current ship, implying that you are storing it in the shuttle bay and could take it on a spin whenever you want. That change could then be incorporated into missions that require using a shuttle for some reason.
It would just be fun to be able to jump into the runabout any time, without having to run back to a starbase.
OP is mad because a shuttle craft cant compare to a full blown ship....
Its a toy, a luxury item, its not driving the economy up a wall. no one is selling Epic phasers for 6 mil on the market for a 146k shuttle craft. get real.
I have one. I love it. A rear admiral friend bought some Chateau Picard off me for the cost of a runabout when I was a Lt. I found it a bit difficult to use as a Lt. Fun, but easily killed. Now that I'm a commander, I should load it up and take it back to SB24. Always good times. And, it makes ogling other starship models easy.
I'd like to say that I'm a bit miffed that the bug is still present which causes tooltip values to scale to the last ship you bought, rather than the one you're using. It drains a little bit of the joy out of flying around in my runabout.
brilliant idea, pvp racing would be an excellant pass time..... i have tried numerous times to ask random runabouts i meet to race, but i have only gotten negative replies, if it was made into an event i am sure it would attract some people
And can you give any logical reason why a big shuttle (runabout) "should" be a "viable alternative" for a light cruiser class STARSHIP? A starship which is, canonically speaking, capable of transporting a runabout?
Actually that is no proper reason: As a Klingon on T5 you also can chose between a bird of prey and a carier wich REALLY can carry and spawn a Bird of Prey.
It would have been logical to give out the Runabout INSTEAD of the Miranda; it doesnt seem proper that a Lieutnant commands a Starship (although Miranda might be a little outdatet) to me, and since almost everything on LT level takes place close to earth it would fit that LTs run the errands at the beginning.
But I like the runabout the way it is. ANd it isnt really expensice, I had higher Repair costs on trying Elite with a 4 man group then that thing costs.

There is a word for people like that. Starts with "I", ends with "diots"

... and no, your personal taste does NOT count as a "logical reason".
The next thing somebody will want is probably Captain Proton's rocket pack not only integrated into the game, but available as a "viable alternative" to a Defiant class escort (ya know, just attach a phaser rifle to the rocket pack).
The runabout isn't supposed to be as good as any of the starships - it's a fun toy, mostly, at the moment. Although some runabout missions would be nice .... perhaps a little space race track even for and with them! Something like in Voyager "Drive".

Spit...snork....choke........Your great! I love it. Couldn't of said it better myself.........I think I choked on a pretzel.
I love the Runabout, but it's true that it's way overpriced. It should be like 10-20k energy credits at most.
Just add shuttles like this to every ship where you can instantly switch back and forth. Could be a fun little mini-game like someone suggested. Take a shuttle through wormhole and scan X in Y time.
Shuttle versus shuttle races. Travel through asteroid belt X, past Nebula Y, around planet Z, and back to point A before any other shuttles.
Shuttle salvage missions. Use shuttle tractor beam and pull X asteroids to mining base Y.
Tons of cool non-combat missions they can add for space and do in shuttles.
