There's also vibrational stresses introduced. On DS9, I seem to recall multiple mentions of the insane amount of vibrations that the engine of the Defiant produces.
Actually according to lore, the first Defiant class ship prototype's engines were ripped from their mountings when the ship engaged them during testing. This was due to the power of the engines versus the structural strength of the ship itself. In short the engines in the Defiant class were too powerful for the ship itself, and thus were downgraded significantly to rectify the problem. The current ships in class have the downgraded impulse engines as a result.

The thing that bothers me about 'balance' is that if you watch a lot of the battles in TNG you've got ships of ALL different 'Tiers' fighting in them. In the battles in DS9 you have Nebulas, Galaxies, Excelsiors, Akiras, Steamrunners, Oslos, the old Mirandas, Defiants, etc, etc. That's something missing in STO. If you go into a higher-tier fleet action you've only got the limited selection of T5 ships in there when you should have a whole gamut of ship classes fighting.

I would have preferred a design for STO that accomodated that... not unlike Eve. But the reasons that such a mix of tech levels occurs in combat in Eve aren't really supported by STO's design premises.

Id personally prefer a tier 6 refit of the miranda or a centaur or akira over a defiant any day. Honestly though I hope nebulas become escorts if there ever added to game..

Well, that one mirror universe episode where Smiley abducted Sisco said that it was vibration and that the power of the engines nearly shakes the ship apart. Sisco then said that he had to have his crew increase the power of the structural integrity field. That's what I was going on.

But still, the point is there. Even with inertial dampners and structural integrity field, the ships do undergo natural strain that will fatigue the metal over time and render further repairs pointless. Like bending a spoon handle too many times. Eventually bending it back is going to be pointless, it'll just fall off.
