I had a long winded suggestion back in beta for ways to encourage the use of ships of all tiers to allow for greater ship diversity.

It basically boiled down to:

PvE mode that worked like a hard mode that was meant for groups. What it would do is assign loot/rewards for the mission based on how many ship levels you took into the instance. For example 5 tier 5 ships would be 25 ship levels. If you did the mission with only 20 ship levels you'd have greater rewards and maybe an achievement or something. The 20 ship levels should be 5 tier 4 ships, 4 tier 5 ships, or any combination like two tier 3's, two tier 5's and a tier 4. There could also be lower ship levels that would allow the missions to offer greater rewards and an achievement for doing missions at this level.

Basically instead of a difficulty slider which modifies the difficulty of your opponents you set these ship level caps which modify the group dynamic you bring in. This method encourages the use of lower tier ships and also encourages grouping with others.

Similarly in PvP it would be interesting if PvP could be balanced so that each side is limited to x amount of ship tiers, creating some actual diversity in the ships you see in PvP. Perhaps a greater point reward for destroying ships that are tiers above you would be helpful as well.

These ideas would actually encourage people to use their lower tier ships and spend the time upgrading them as much as they can to be used competitively instead of collecting dust. This method also has the added benefit of not skewing canon to make a Miranda perform on the same level as a Galaxy class.

In short it would just make the game more interesting both visually(Canonically) and strategically(Within PvP) if everyone was flying different ships end game it would just be awesome.

Well, due to this thread - and your posts, in particular - I decided to put my Engineering Captain 8 back into her T2 Connie Refit, upgrade everything, and run some missions. Most fun I've had playing STO (PVE, that is) in a while.

Still, I think it would be even MOAR fun if my BOs weren't limited to 4 ensign skills and 1 lieutenant skill. If my guys could access all their skills, I'd be tempted to try this thing in T4 PVP...

Exactly what we are talking about! Cannon is derived from what is put in front of us, film, books, series, etc.

I have hashed at this suggestion and believe it to be cannon to have active Tier 1 ships serving at tier 5 capassity. Do I think that a tier 1 should out perform a tier 5? Heck NO! But a tier 1 Piloted by an outstanding captain could devestate a tier 5 with a shaky captain hands down.

These are the classes of ships I identified in the opening battle sequence of "First Contact" simply watching it on YouTube! There was a couple others I could have guessed at but decided not to. Additionally I noted that the Admiral's ship had been destroyed and through out the show Admirals always seem to fly in Excelsior class ships.

Constitution Class ships ARE still in service however, the ENTERPRISE name has been passed on to newer models of vessels as they have come out AFTER the proceding Enterprise has been destroyed. Understanding this is the concept to when you unlock a new model of ship that you consider taking that model.

This should not mean those who like a certain model best must take a "newer" model to be at thier best. I would suggest the the biggest difference between the tiers is the HULL. If you continue in a lower tier ship and your shilds drop you can basically kiss it goodbye! But then for the most part that is true with most ships lol!

A refit would: increase/decrease Hull slightly, increase/decrease turn slightly, alter crew slightly, improve BO performance, improve ship consoles. I think the biggest change from a tier 1 to tier 5 is the BO skills and Consoles authorized. Ultimatly that is it. If you want to use a Miranda class at RA you skills will be the same your consoles comparable to a tier 5. This thing that will cause you to lose the fight would be your hull points, and crew available.

I have used my Tier 3 escort with the Mk X items and it has the capabilities in PvE to keep up even on advance mode. I have only 4 BO avail, LT Engineer and Science, LTC and Esn Tacs. That means I am only really missing out on 4 total skills but I do notice that makes a huge difference. I also lose console positions which makes a noticible difference. These are essentially the big change that would take place with a refit.

Now maybe this is what is considered for the "Tier 6" setup, but I like the concept of instead of buying a new ship with the admirals token I take a refit and construct improvments on my vessel.

Something you are taking into account if 300 years of technological advancement. If you read the soft-canon notes of the ship's designers, you find that are designed to have operation lifetimes of 100 years. The ships being periodically refitting with the latest systems is already a part of their design.

It's not the technology that would have to be rediscovered. It's all of the insituational knowledge that't been/being lost. All of the plans are still avaialbe. But all of the experience and knowledge that took to make them work well ad solve problems that popped up is gone. All of that would be to be relarned/developred again.

i would love to see some really old designs such as a the akazi, belknap, eagle and some of those double secondary hull 4 nacelles monster ships from some of the other games.

i'm not particularly worried if we cap out at rear admiral 11 for a period of time whilst new ship designs are considered and implemented.

i half wouldn't mind if we could somehow implement a link in with crafting and MA to design and build the teir 6 ships, that our dailies incorporated the need to hunt up ship componentry, or that we could decide the ships basic layout - like ships weapons - say having 6 weapons on the front and 2 on the back as in the case of a cruiser. or that we could design shields / engines / deflectors / weapons to have the individual characteristics that we wish to assign them as others have suggested
