The Imperial-Class ASSAULT CRUISER, is not like older starfleet ships. While exploration is still a key part of starfleets charter, Warships have become a lot more common, and necessary.

That said... Some of the ships are really ugly.
Warships might be more common, but you have missed the point. The Imperial class is totally out of place as a Starfleet vessel. Beyond the fact that it is an ugly design, it also looks aggressive and predatory. A Starfleet vessel, heavily armed or not, are not designed to look aggressive. You can't say that you are friendly and peaceful, when the ship you arrive in screams "I'm gonna rip your world to pieces, because I can!" A Federation starship should carry a big stick, but walks softly.

I have to disagree. I like the designs, and they seem like they could be the result of years of development, and the natural evolution of ships like the Sov, Defiant, hell, even the Olympic class. (Now THAT is an ugly bird right there.)

I vastly prefer the existing Star Cruisers to the Vesta Class and anything to the 1701-J.

I've looked over the discussion and most arguments are valid.

But in the end it (for me that is) comes down to this fact: The Star Trek Universe has general design rules that have to apply to any and all starships, and as long as theese are fulfilled, a ship can basically look in any manner the designer wants.

If cause there are certain design rules to each race as well, that should be observed at any time, and here the "clean style" arguments come into play. Starfleet Ships should be Smooth almost aerodynamic, except for Escorts (Such as the Defiant, Saber, Norway or Yaeger and several Raiders).

Klingons on the other hand should have a Bulky and Bird-like design, that resembles any of the diffrent bird types out there.

I could go on... I've spend some time reading up on this when i helped develop models for BC.
I always used this to guide me, and perhaps Cryptic would consider this as well:

Heres a example of what i've made out of that (work in progress for BC)

I saw a couple good looking designs, and a few bad ones. The bad ones just seem more like "star Wars-y" instead of Star Trekkie. Too many sharp points, starfleet ships are built around smooth curves and elegance.

Maybe what he was trying to ask is WHY are all the new ship designs so UN CANNON. OBVIOUSLY Defiant Was a starfleet design, Hell it was in DS9 for 7 season.

But I have to Agree, The new ship designs are UGLY, My question would be WHY make these other ships instead of bringing in Cannon ship designs ?! Why not bring in a nebula class ship, excelsior, or ambassador....

AND my OTHER question, Why the hell not call these ships by there ACTUAL Cannon Class?

Why is It "Science Vessel" and not Intepid Class Vessel, ??

Thats what bugs me the most i have to say

Itīs canon i think and the defiant wasnīt in all 7 seasons of ds9. :p

I guess the reason it says science vessel and not intrepid is because you can mix parts of different ship designs, i see horrible names in my mind: cochtrepid class for example.

As for the excelsior, ambassador and so on, they are really old by now, certainly around in some ways but not the modern premium designs of starfleet by now.
