Matt, seeing as how popular TOS and other retro versions Trek are here. I don't see any real need to appease objectors. Cryptic is going to make their decisions based on money. Right now it looks like there's a lot of money to be made with the older stuff. People are asking for it left and right.

BTW

Any pistol would look like a good ol' type 2 phaser and a rifle would look like the type 3. It would be nice if the sound and the beam color could match also.

This would of course be optional.

Edit:
Forgot melee. For TOS Federation two handed the Lirpa and for one hand or dual wield. The Mirror dagger.

Though who would be crazy enough to bring a melee weapon to a ray gun fight?

All for the new look but if someone wants to run in a old ship they should be allowed. Options and more options is what I want. The more limited your selection the more you limit how will play.

You're right Sleeves, options, options, options and more options.

Which is why I would prefer that upgrades of different hull configurations get differentiation of abilities beyond being just a skin on the higher-tiered ship.

If that's they way in which you would like to upgrade your ship. Then you should have the option to do so. Just as I should have the option to upgrade mine they way I would like to.

I'd like some semblance of verisimilitude to be maintained. Within the current design tiers, there is little overall variation in size, volume, and configuration. Even where the variance is more significant than most, such as in the Tier 3 Escorts and Cruisers, it's much less than the difference between Tier 5 ships and Tier 2 ships. Cryptic also wants to maintain at-a-glance visual matching of ships to capabilities and would have to get this approved by CBS.

That's why I think upgraded ships should stay differentiated from tier-native ships. There's just not the same amount of room for the same amount of weapon systems, the same amount of crew, etc. On the other hand, they can still get crammed full of upgraded systems with less of the performance overhead from managing a bigger vessel (more BO slots, perhaps even than tier-native ships) and get advanced special-role equipment applied that might be a waste to dedicate the resources of a bigger ship type to (special powers).

Too bad ship weapons wasn't resticted to Tiers, that would be a nice something that would go with upgrades.

But basically right now, Refitting would be just upgrading Specialized Consoles (Engineering - Cruisers, Science - Science, and Tactical with Escorts). Adding weapon slots be nice too, but it would risk of replacing that Tier's ship.

I totally agree that refits should be made available for those who want to use their favorite starship all the way to end-game. There's already non-canon ship balancing occurring in the game (The Constellation is OLD, but has brand new ships in the same tier in STO it's comparable to), so why not let players spend their own energy credits to buy refit packages.

MK I Refit - +1 Tier Refit
MK II Refit - +2 Tier Refit

and so on...

I also agree a refitted ship can't have the exact same specs as a ship that was built for a specific tier, so putting the refit ships at a slight disadvantage makes sense to me. (Look at the Original Series Enterprise as an example. It's phasers are are always one level below the max level equipment for your rank.) Something like that would make sense for refit ships. Maybe something like : all refit ships only carry 90% of the specs of their normal tier ship counterpart. (Just grasping at straws here.)

I disagree that they should necessarily be lesser, just different. Either more specialized or (harder to implement but more straightforward) make 'refits' past 2 or 3 tiers up command of multiple vessels, with the others less upgraded.
