# 1 Diversity in attack patterns
10-08-2010, 04:44 PM
I was watching an episode of DS9, and a battle sequence gave me an idea. There is not just one omega or delta maneuver. The Captain usually gives the order for a variation of a maneuver, such as Omega 4, or Alpha 2.

So possibly we can do something to add some diversity to our powers. Maybe an idea would be to have bridge officers be able to learn different variations of the attack patterns, or when we level we get to choose one of the variations when it becomes available for us at a particular rank.

I was thinking that maybe the variations could offer a slight change in the attribute bonuses they provide. For example, for attack pattern alpha, maybe Alpha 1 would offer more maneuverability (Which would benefit more for cruisers and sci vessels) but less damage buffs. Alpha 2 would offer some other slight change, or possibly a slight buff to a new category. Clearly this is something the devs can work out.

Clearly, this will have to be implemented to all classes for the sake of fairness. Mauybe the Science ability of sensor scan could become a little more specific, at least in name to allow the diversity (Tachyon scan, graviton scan, etc.).

I strongly believe that a little more diversity in the powers and abilities will make a significant difference in game play in a positive way if done correctly, and also add a new dimension to the strategy in all categories of combat of STO.

I like this idea in principle. Although in the short term I have otehr goals I would rather see the Devs working on. Like the delivery of desperately needed content. The problem is that these kind of things hae a majorimpact on gameplay and often tend to take a lot of fiddling and patching to get the balance right.

Perhaps i na future seaosn rollout we will see this kind of thing.

I think the diversity in attack patterns is a great idea. The game content that you speak of is at least a year out and mostly planned already. It patience that players need to have. here is content coming you have to wait for it.
There have been so many interview with Stahl where he has stated this. This I want it all now attitude that some players have is impossible. Content has to stream out in a proper time frame. it would suck it they gave you everything all at once. You will want more when you are done with it.
Its a shame that the tactical ensign slots on all ships lack diversity it that was changed it would be a much better thing for everyone. that is what they can do with the attack pattern diversity make some of them in the ensign slot.

To sound like a real nay-sayer - tehre are plenty of ensign options if you are prepared to load up a beam weapon, or a torp. It is only a problem if you want all cannon up front.

I have, in principle, no problem with the idea that an over specialised ship loses some flexibility.

For the sake of argument, let's go ahead and acknowledge both sides. I understand that the devs have plenty to work on now. I can also completely understand that having more diversity at the ensign BO levels may be too much, as there are a lot to pick from there. Maybe I should change my position to say that I was hoping to brainstorm some new ideas for down the road. I would just like to see a thread where there is simple planning and input by the fan base.

I think that they do need to add more ensign abilities for Tactical Officers, as there is really nothing at least good for us to have. Though it is not the BIGGEST issue, it is something that should be dealt with eventually.
