You're doing something I wrong. I know it sounds d-baggy, but if you can not keep a carrier alive for 1 minute to get the initial wave of fighters out... or know how to quickly target the next target so they do not return to the ship... then you should probably stick to escorts. One word: Harden. If you do not know what it means, ask your fleet, or anyone who actually reads the skill tool tips.

Cloaked defiants have tried to alpha my carrier... they can normally get a shield arc down and 2-3% hull damage, but by the time they come around, the shield is back and aint going down to one ship again... its about knowing how to defend your ship.

Carriers have no offensive capabilities out side of their fighters... so take all of your eng, and all of your sci, and stuff them full of tanking heals.
