just a small update to the list of my nightshift-candidates:

there will be mercenary outfits soon,
and if our BOs ever will get access to the off-duty clothes,
i would love to see some of them in my crew...
i guess it would make an awesome away-team-optic...

pretty same to the "7of9"- and "T'Pol"-suits as soon they will come live...
but probably off-duty too...

if my "like-to-see BO-options" would be granted, (look at my signature)
i could set up a far longer list of BOs i would just generate to be Nightshift...

I'm all for Cryptic implementing some new fix that allows all the npc crew we see in our interiors (not just on the bridge) to wear the same uniform that our boffs wear - just to give uniformity (pardon the pun). But this whole nightshift idea doesn't really appeal to me at all. Just sayin'.

maybe im able to make this idea a bit more interesting fou you...

first of all, yes, this idea was born before the interiors came out,
so it was mainly designed to make the bridge itself a nicer place to be...

and i agree, now the interiors are ingame,
crew-wide uniform-customization would be more important...

but still you would see "only" nameless crew members all over the ship,
some Nightshift-BOs might have certain stations beside the bridge too now,
like a science is shown at the sickbay and an engineer at the core etc...
or imagine if we ever get access to off-duty with our BOs
some of the nightshift might be claimable as civilians
and you may find someone like Neelix in your lounge...
and i really believe you would feel more "at home" if you see your own Nightshift-BOs there...

in addition a basic part of the original idea is still actual,
even i agree that not everyone is interested in:
if you replace one or some of your BOs you dont have to lose your old ones,
but might send them into the nightshift-list, which would "keep them alive",
as i said in the opener, anyone seeing more than redshirts in his BOs would appreciate it...

moreover this idea would open up ways for some nice sidekicks,
some smaller like you would have simply more "faces" who might brief you for a mission,
some more gameplay ones like a mission where you have to free your Nightshift entrapped on bridge,
because your ship was bordered while you was on an away mission...

just a few points,

greets your Colo

since there is the Breen-BO now as new rare-to-get-BO,
which is a further BO ppl will mislike to discharge ever
and a further step within the "alien invasion" on our bridge,
i added some notes and updated some parts of the opening post again...

dont get me wrong, of course im happy i was able to get all these BOs,
but if i look around on friends bridges our crews become more and more similar...

main thing i added this time are additional BO-appearance-spots on every bridge,
which are meant to show randomly loaded Nightshift-BOs...

Major Update:

i believe it is time to rework this idea for the upcoming UGC.
as far as i know it is planned that we will be able to customize our ship-interiors
with a later release of the UGC tools...

and i believe a redesigned version of this idea might fit very well there...

and since the name of this idea caused some confusing already,
i want to say again that "Nightshift" is just a name and no function...
i just thought it fits well to "more secondary" characters within your crew...

first of all we would have to be able to set "appearance spots" within the interiors.
and i hope the places where our BOs appear on the bridge might be reworked to these spots as well.
depending to if its a seat or a place to stand at, we are able to choose a certain emote for each spot.

then, as part of UGC-subtool for the ship interiors, we have the addional "Nightshift-BO-list".
(again i just want to mention that Nightshift-BOs are no "useable" BOs,
they have no skills or traits and cant be assigned f.e. to your away team...)

your Nightshift-BO-list is always as long as your regular BO-list,
means if you are actually able to hold 8 BOs, you may hold 8 Nightshift-BOs as well...

when you create a Nightshift-BO, you may choose any regular BO-species and visuals...
so if you was always missing f.e. a ferengi on your ship, you may just create one as a Nightshift-BO,
using the regular UGC-tools for creating a NPC...

but back to the original design point, that this idea is meant to "save" BOs that you are used to,
before you maybe have to replace them, you should be able to create visual copies of your regular BOs.
this should include the BOs with rare visuals, like the Khitomer Borg f.e. .
so if you finally decide not to use such a rare-visual-BO anymore,
you may at least save his appearance as a Nightshift-BO and he stays part of your crew this way...

finally, when your complete BO-list and Nightshift-BO-list setup is finished,
you may "assign" both kinds of them to the different "appearance-spots",
that are preset on your bridge and you have placed within your interiors...
this would be finally a solution as well for the annoying point,
that you cant really control where your BOs appear on the bridge exactly...
and you might mix it up a bit, like your bridge shows half regular BOs and half Nightshift-BOs,
while your chief-engineer, who is part of your regular BOs,
may be assigned to an "appearance-spot" you have placed in your engineering room...

this helps as well to avoid the fact which i call "the alien bridge invasion", which means:
of course many of us try to gather as many BOs with rare visuals and skills as possible,
but instead of making our crew more and more unique this way,
it ends in a more and more common mix of certain BOs...
and beside many bridges show almost the same crew,
there are no many regular fed-species on a fed-bridge anymore...
with mixing up regular BOs and Nightshift-BOs on your bridge and interiors,
you might spread your rare visual-BOs all over your ship...

moreover the UGC-tools of NPC-generation would allow us to add Nightshift-BOs,
which are just to add some "flair" to your interiors,
like creating a civilian and place him in your lounge like Neelix appeared on the Voyager...
or you might create... no wait... this would end in too many examples

all over this would be a good way to customize your crew within / as part of the interiors
and would definitely make the interiors more feeling to be your ship
and as well it would be really a reason to "explore" someone elses interiors...

and of course it avoids that you have to discharge BOs that you really like completely,
if you get a new BO with "better" skills or a new rare visual appearance...

Greetings your Colo

i love the ideas developed by the OP. i would recommend 2 things. first, limit the number of night-shift boffs. If you limited it by the size of your interior, small interiors would probably only need 5 or 6 NSBoffs, while Large could probably handle 15 to 20. Too many of them would become a management nightmare. 2) have them provide some type of bonus for your ship. Maybe add a point to your weapons systems if you have a tactical NSBoff. An engineering bonus could be applied to shields and engines if you have an engineer on the night shift. Finally a science officer on the night shift could boost auxillary and deflectors. A passive bonus. What do you think?

1) i added a limit in the major update i posted above you
it is always the same amount of NSBOs like regular BOs you may have...
so it "grows" with your toon while ranking up... and with getting larger ships...

2) even a passive bonus would be a very difficult thing...
i tried to avoid yet that they give any benefit, for a simple reason:
they should customize your ship / crew / interiors, but shouldnt become a part of your gaming setup...
i fear that ppl would feel forced to have certain NSBOs again, instead of a free choice...
if these benefits would stack it could even get too powerful with more NSBOs...
the only way i could imagine it right now if it is limited to the rare-reward-BOs,
f.e. if you give up the Khitomer-Borg as an active part of your crew and send him to the Nighshift...

ask cryptic 1st Nov:

Q: raddicalrabbit: Are there plans to extend the amount of bridge officers viewable on a player's ship either by having them located in other sections of the interior (e.g. engineering, sick bay or ten forward) or expanding the numbers avaliable on bridges?

A: We are looking to expand on the concept of a ship's crew roster as a major feature in Season 4 so stay tuned!

no idea how it will be, but something is coming!
