I dont claim to be a hardcore player and i'm certainly not a frequent poster here on the forums but I am a regular visitor and read a lot of the discussions going on. The following post is from my own experiences and form my personal opinion on the way our avatars/ship captains are set up and how i think they maybe should set up.

I have an idea/feedback on ship and BO setups (sorry if its been suggested before) and the way I personally envisioned them from before i started in beta, not everyone will like the ideas i will post here but pleasing everyone in an mmo is nigh on impossible so here goes.

The basis of this thread is that the three core choices in making a captain are after a while far too generic - its your BO skill choices and ship that seem to matter more than your avatar. To me my Captain/avatar should the base from where my gaming experience goes from and finally ends up in end game. The decision to make a tac captain over a sci/eng captain should have a profound effect at end game and I'm not really seeing this as the game stands now, I also dislike the idea of 'Pigeonholing' captains to certain ships which is where i think the game is at right now.

My suggestion is this:
As T1 & T2 are both part of the learning curve and I think should be left as is.
From T3 onwards all ships from both factions have universal BO slots. (please read on and dont flame me yet)
The caveat of this is there is restricted use of BO skills:
Our captains/avatars can only slot BO skills of Lt Comm and Commander if they are of the same skill type. What i mean by this is a Tac captain is the only player type who can have BO's using tactical skills of LtC and Commander rank - same goes for sci and eng captains.

To me this gives some emmersion to the game also as your captain excels at the abilities available to him and has some skills available though BO's that others dont and of course there is the trade off that an eng captain cant use commander rank sci skills like they can now if they chose too.

On the flip side those who play for example tac in an escort/raptor wont see any change as these higher rank BO skills (sci & eng) are all but negated anyway. What this would give is the ability for any class of captain to play any ship he/she wanted and accept the pitfalls/befits of doing so.

To use an analogy - when Riker left the Enterprise E to captain the Titan, did he have to back to ESD to retrain his skills to be an effective captian of a sci/exploration ship. (prob not the be analogy but the best i can come up with at 1 am)

Anyways, these are my thoughts. I've most likley missed a gaping hole in why this cannot be implemented but please discuss.

That could work, or you could just include space kits for your officer. You could go one of two ways. Have them work like ground kits, marks I-XII with powers based on the level, or brake it up into 4 kits ensign - commander. If you go the 4 box way your officer would have more control over each power. For example a starting tac officer would start with an ensign box, that officer could put in any tac ensign power they could buy find or craft, when they get promoted to LC the tac officer would get a new box for leut powers. This would achive the samething without having to mod every ship in the game. Also they could go the way of device powers. Like battery one use, but for powers, for example you have the device HYT 1. The device would work just like the power, but be used up like a battery. This would let any ship function in a limited way as any other.
