Is there any point to keeping the ships that you've commanded while leveling, aside from nostalgic reasons? Or is it better to discharge them to make room for the max tier ships you want to try? Any thoughts on this?

There is no need to discharge any ships. You have plenty of room to store one from each tier as you level, plus about 2 or 3 more.

If you want to use a lower tier ship as you level up you can. Its possible to be successful but very difficult when it comes to battles. They aren't made for higher tiers so they aren't as strong.

There's not much point to having more than two different T5 ships, especially outside the captain track you specialized in.

I hold onto a couple of ships because I like the way i customized them, so that would fall into your nostalgia category. Recently I took one out for a little flight around ESD, only to find that one of the visual updates caused a clipping issue between the nacelles and saucer on my Heavy Cruiser. Suffice it to say I am skeptical of revisiting many of my ships now
