# 1 some PvP nUblette questions
12-02-2010, 12:36 PM
I haven't actually played STO for several months now and did not try PvP when I did play, but I'm thinking of coming back exclusively for PvP. I've been reading this board for the past few days, but still have some PvP nUblette questions and am looking for some advice.
  • Is PvP play thriving for both Federation and Klingon players? Comparing this forum with the others on these boards it is obvious that PvP is where the intelligent players are at, but is the game play limited because there is only a small number of PvP players, or is there a lot of PvP going on?
  • Are cruisers only really valueable as pure healers? I realize that the Assault Cruiser is a dud, but I've got the Heavy Cruiser refit and I think there is some good potential there for a hybrid healer and debuffer/buffer. I know that utility pretty much belongs to Science, but is there room for a little cruiser creativity in PvP? Or would that just be bringing the suck to the group?
  • Is Ground PvP as pointless as Ground PvE? When I played before, I leveled up a Fed Eng to RALH5. He is an Alien with Efficient, Techie, Warp Theorist, and Stubborn. While Stubborn had some usefulness for Ground PvE, would it be worth the time to reroll him and take Elusive or Accuracy instead? Is either Elusive or Accuracy worth having in a non-DPS build cruiser that maneuvers like a school bus on a frozen lake?
  • I'm planning to play on both the Fed and Klingon sides, and am thinking of playing similar builds for each; except the KDF doesn't have a ship comparable to the Heavy Cruiser refit, so I'm looking at the Negh'Var Battle Cruiser (which doesn't have the BO options I want, but whatcha gonna do). When I played before I experimented a little with a Tactical/Escort and Science/Science but I don't think I could do justice to those in either PvE or PvP, which is why I'm planning on Eng/Cruiser. Since I do not have a Klingon captain, I'll need to roll that from scratch.
Finally, if I do re-roll my Fed captain, is it possible to play him PvP as I'm leveling up, or will I be doing the PvE stuff again?

Thanks for any advice.

P.S.: Thanks to Matt_Davis and faithborn for their great and sticky guides.

PVP does a pretty brisk business. It varies day by day and from tier to tier, of course --- your best luck will come in the VA tier on Friday & Saturday during the evening. The queue pops can be pretty much non-stop during the good times. During the week in the lower tiers, it can sometimes be few and far between for matches.

Cruisers are valuable for their survivability, first and foremost. You can build a good DPS Cruiser (and I agree that the Excelsior refit is the best for this, but Assault Cruisers are not IMO, duds), or a good healing Cruiser, or even a DPS Cruiser that can secondary heal (especially useful if the entire enemy team ignores you, as they tend to do if there are Escort targets). The thing about DPSing with a Cruiser is that it is all sustained DPS, and not very bursty. You're far better off working with groupmates to put pressure on targets, rather than trying to pop someone by yourself (though that's pretty much true all the time). Cruisers get a ton of Eng. slots, so you're really mainly limited in your "creativity" by what you can do with those.

Can't speak to ground PVP, since I don't do it (hate ground stuff). Just FYI, you're probably not going to be able to do both space and ground very effectively with the same character. You just don't have the points.

Negh'var is a very good cruiser (cannons!). If you're looking for a more science oriented experience, you can always try the Vo'Quv (and make everyone very, very angry with your OPness) or one of the new ships they just added.

You can PVP a Fed through the queue system just like you do a Klingon, but it takes WAY longer to do with exclusively PVP. I suggest that you just queue up while doing more skill-point rich stuff (plus very low level PVP is kind of a slog, since you have basically no BO abilities, and pretty much no survivablity).

Good luck!

Ground PvP is awesome! There aren't many that play it, but those that do love it. As far as traits go, the general vibe people give off is that ground traits are more important to ground PvP than space skills to space PvP, but I have no idea what truth there is to that. Either way, it's much more important to have a team and good working togetherness than traits.

Look at the ground traits vs the space ones...the ground ones either boost dmg significantly (Pirate +30% exploit dmg) or make the opponent exposed longer/more often, etc. The ground traits are often more like the equivalent of a skill in space than a space trait.

* It depends on day, tier, whether it's space or ground, etc.

*dont really know about cruisers, know how to make them tanks but beyond that no idea, don't play them.

*ground pvp is a lot quicker than ground pve

*thats really you're choice but in general I do think I think you're cutting yourself short, should do what you think will be more fun since as you're leveling up the new kdf toon you'll learn to play the class better and if you ask for advice from others you'll pick up a lot of info (like flying at impulse speed of 26 gives you the defense cap 75%). Also you don't have to lock a tac toon with an escort or a eng with a cruiser.

As far as I'm aware, it's not a bad sized community, but it's far from the entire game being involved.

No, I've seen and have played my share of cruisers, especially on the Klingon side, and with the Negh'var and the Vor'cha's ability to equip Dual/Dual Heavy cannons they can be damage dealing power houses. Even on the Federation side, it is very plausable to be a Tactical Captian in a Cruiser and dish out some solid damage.

Ground PVE Really has not changed much from what I've played. Some one from the ground portion of the PVP Community could probobly better answer this question, if they haven't already.

I'm a little confused by the statement and can only try to translate as this being the Excelesior Retrofit? Because if that's the case, no there is no variant of that ship on the Klingon side. Where as the Galaxy Retrofit, with it's hat off, is the Neg'var Battle Cruiser and the Vor'cha Retrofit is a cloak variant on the Assault Cruiser. (Hull points and Shield points may Vary between their Federation counterparts) Also, reciently, the Orion Marader is a near copy of the Star Cruiser with a console change for the Intercepter pets.

Thanks for any advice.
Low levels, PVP really isn't there. Or at least it's rare. You might be better off now adays PVEing back up again vs. trying to PVP your way up.
